Description
Phone Braver 01, also known as Zero-One, is the prototype of the Phone Braver series and carries the model number PB-CMP-PROT01, marking him as the original test unit that preceded the numbered production models such as Phone Braver 7. He was created by Under Anchor, the technology-crime investigation branch of the communications provider Anchor, but he eventually turned against the organization and became a renegade.
As a character, Phone Braver 01 is quietly confident and observant. In his unassuming mobile phone form, he can blend into everyday life and study humanity unnoticed, while his active form is a humanoid robot built for combat. He is independent, difficult to predict, and willing to operate outside the rules of Under Anchor, which places him in direct opposition to the more disciplined Phone Braver 7.
Early in the story, Phone Braver 01 serves as a recurring adversary. He acts as the benefactor of the high-tech criminals that the Under Anchor agents investigate, and he is directly responsible for the destruction of Phone Braver 2, the former partner of agent Chigusa Mimasaka. His actions are closely tied to the schemes of Kurando Magira, a mysterious former agent, including the abduction of Keita Amishima and Phone Braver 7 and the attempt to trigger another Parallel Decentralized Link event. During this incident, Zero-One holds the fate of Seven in his hands, but Keita's words persuade him to spare the younger robot.
His relationship with Keita develops significantly after this point. Keita offers to take Zero-One under his care, and although the prototype initially leaves, he later accepts the connection and visits Keita's home from time to time, both to recharge and to cause general mischief. He also leaves behind a text message warning of a possible mole inside Anchor, information that proves important to the larger plot. Later, when the threat known as Tada resurfaces, Phone Braver 01 is forced to team up with Chigusa Mimasaka to save Keita, and the experience allows her to make peace with the robot who destroyed her former partner.
In terms of abilities, Phone Braver 01 possesses the standard capabilities of the Phone Braver line: he can transform between a compact mobile phone form and a full humanoid active form, and he can connect to machines and networks, giving him access to the digital systems used in Under Anchor investigations.
