Description
In the 2011 film Transformers Dark of the Moon, the character known as Hatchet is a Decepticon and a member of an elite infiltration unit called the Dreads. As part of this team, which also includes Crowbar and Crankcase, Hatchet specializes in combat and counter-attacks against Autobot forces. Despite his brutish and animalistic appearance, he is described in official materials as a master strategist known for formulating devastating counter-attacks against Autobot defenses. His role within the Dreads is to take on the dirtiest and most dangerous assignments personally, dispatching his targets with brutal and efficient finality.
Hatchet serves Megatron directly and is summoned to Earth from the Moon, where many Decepticons were hiding. In one version of the story, Hatchet and the other Dreads quietly emerge from the lunar surface and hitch a ride on an Autobot shuttle returning to Earth. His primary motivation is to follow Megatron's orders to retrieve the powerful Autobot founder, Sentinel Prime, who has just been reactivated. When the human Sam Witwicky learns of the Decepticon plan, the Autobots form a convoy to protect Sentinel. Hatchet, Crankcase, and Crowbar are dispatched to pursue the convoy, initially disguised as government emergency vehicles, specifically Chevrolet Suburbans.
Hatchet's key relationships are with his fellow Dreads, as the three operate as a cohesive team. In the ensuing highway battle, after Crowbar reveals himself and attacks, Hatchet and Crankcase transform and launch their assault. This leads to Hatchet's demise. He is targeted by the Autobot warrior Dino, who embeds anchored blades into Hatchet's back, corralling the Decepticon into the line of fire of Bumblebee and Sideswipe. After being pounded with Autobot weapons fire, Dino tosses Hatchet across the highway, where he crashes into an oncoming car and is destroyed.
Regarding his abilities, Hatchet possesses a distinct quadrupedal, beast-like robot mode that allows for superior mobility, contrasting with his humanoid teammates. This form gives him a feral, dog-like appearance. He is trained in vicious combat tactics and, as a member of the Dreads, is capable of infiltrating human society by transforming into a seemingly unremarkable vehicle. Outside of the live-action film, other versions of the character exist, such as a toy interpretation that transforms into a modified Eurofighter Typhoon jet rather than an SUV.
