Description
Maki Saionji is a prominent character from the manga and anime series Drops of God. She serves as a key figure in the wine world's high-stakes business and social circles. Her professional position is that of the president of Saionji Corporation, also known as SAION Trading, a company that specializes in the import and sale of wine. This role grants her extensive and powerful connections within the fine wine industry.
In her personal capacity, Maki acts as the financial sponsor for the young wine critic Issei Tomine. She is also depicted as his on-and-off casual lover. Despite being fully aware of Issei's habit of having romantic flings with other women, Maki desires to have him all to herself. This unrequited wish fuels much of her actions and schemes throughout the story.
Maki is characterized as an unscrupulous and vindictive individual who will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. Her motivations are driven by a combination of personal jealousy and professional greed. She has a strong commercial interest in Issei winning the inheritance contest against the protagonist, Shizuku Kanzaki. Her aim is to be able to sell each of the revealed legendary wines at the highest possible price, profiting immensely from the late critic Yutaka Kanzaki's popularity and reputation.
This ruthless nature is evident in her actions within the plot. She once set a trap to disadvantage Shizuku in his search for one of the twelve Apostles. Furthermore, out of jealousy, she plotted a conspiracy to drive another character, Loulan, away from Issei. She is often described as a spiteful and venal figure, with very few redeeming qualities, making her one of the most stereotypically villainous characters in the series. Her key relationships, therefore, are largely defined by manipulation and obsession, particularly with Issei, and outright antagonism towards Shizuku and anyone she perceives as a threat to her goals. Her abilities lie not in wine tasting, but in her financial power, her extensive business network, and her cunning willingness to use underhanded tactics to manipulate events to her favor.
