Description
Emi Yusa, originally Emilia Justina, is a half-human, half-angel hybrid from Ente Isla. Chosen as the Hero by the Church to oppose Demon King Satan's conquest, she was raised by her human father, Nord Justina, on a Western Continent farm after her archangel mother Lailah departed due to their taboo union. The destruction of her village by Lucifer's demon army led her to believe her father was killed, solidifying her resolve to become the Hero and fueling intense hatred for Satan's forces. Her crusade saw her defeat demon generals Lucifer (mistakenly believed killed), Adramelech, and Malacoda, culminating in severing one of Satan's horns and forcing his retreat to Earth.
Pursuing Satan to modern-day Tokyo, Emilia lost most magical powers due to Earth's low energy. Adopting the alias "Emi Yusa" and fabricating her age as 20, she worked as a call center operator while monitoring the Demon King—now Sadao Maou—and his general Alciel (Shirō Ashiya). Early interactions were hostile; she attempted assassination but was thwarted by mutual powerlessness and comical human authority intervention. Despite vengeful intentions, she observed Maou's reformed behavior—diligence at MgRonald's and acts like lending an umbrella—causing her to question his inherent evil while remaining distrustful.
Emi exhibits fierce determination and emotional vulnerability. She possesses strong moral principles, loyalty to allies, and protectiveness toward innocents, stemming from her traumatic past. She also displays a quick temper, social awkwardness, and self-doubt, particularly about her physical appearance—notably a breast-size complex causing envy of women like Chiho Sasaki. Her mundane interests include Japanese historical dramas (especially "Raging General") and curry. Despite combat prowess, she fears simulated ghosts in haunted houses.
Key developments include uncovering Ente Isla Church corruption. Betrayal by High Priest Olba Meyer and archangel Sariel—who tortured her for her sacred sword—shattered her trust. Revelations of her father's survival (secretly rescued by Lailah) and Maou's backstory as a ruler fighting for demonkind eroded her black-and-white worldview. Her relationship with Maou evolved from antagonism to reluctant cooperation after jointly adopting Alas Ramus, a Sephirot Yesod fragment identifying them as parents. This forced familial bond led to collaboration protecting Alas Ramus, battling angels like Gabriel, and participating in "dates" for the child.
Emi transitioned to working at MgRonald's alongside Maou and Chiho, symbolizing integration into human life. Maou formally appointed her a Demon General, reflecting their aligned interests in protecting Earth and Ente Isla. Her feelings for Maou grew ambiguous, blending lingering resentment with affection and unresolved romantic tension, complicated by Chiho's overt love for him. Visually, her character design softened in later seasons, with less stern expressions and attire shifts (call-center uniforms to MgRonald's workwear), mirroring her internal conflict and gradual acceptance of Maou's humanity.
