Description
Hanazono Otoya is a central character who arrives at Fujimori Academy as a mysterious transfer student, first appearing in the second episode of the series. His background is marked by a deep and painful family history. He grew up with his older brother, Shuya Arisada, whom he once greatly admired. On his ninth birthday, however, Shuya left him, an act Otoya describes as being abandoned. The exact reasons for this separation are never fully explained, as Shuya claims he believed he was acting in Otoya's best interest, while Otoya simply wanted to remain by his brother's side. This childhood wound becomes the driving force behind his actions years later when he enrolls at Fujimori, as he seeks revenge on his brother and aims to make him understand the suffering he caused.

Otoya's personality is defined by a potent mix of dissatisfaction, ambition, and a hidden vulnerability forged by his past. From the moment he arrives, he is openly critical of the school's established Princess system, viewing the current Princesses as performing their duties with only half-hearted effort. He also accuses the Student Council, led by his brother, of neglecting the student body's true wishes. To challenge this status quo, Otoya forms a rival group called the Dark Princesses, recruiting students Minamoto Kurou and Mori Ranta to join him. He also nominates himself as a candidate to form a new Student Council, directly declaring a conflict with Arisada's leadership. His primary motivation is not merely to disrupt the school's traditions but to dismantle the world his brother presides over as an act of personal revenge. He wants to usurp Arisada's position and force him to experience loss and understand the pain of being left behind.

Within the story, Otoya serves as the primary rival and antagonist to the original Princesses and the existing school order. His role is to act as a catalyst, forcing the other characters, particularly Mikoto Yutaka, to confront their true feelings about the Princess system. By creating the Dark Princesses, he directly competes for the student body's attention, challenging the original group's legitimacy. His plot to take over the Student Council forms the central conflict of the narrative, leading to a tense election campaign that determines the school's future direction. Otoya's relationship with his brother Shuya Arisada is the deepest and most complex in the series. While Arisada is the target of his revenge, their connection is rooted in past admiration and familial bonds. Despite his anger, the core of his motivation is a desperate wish to be acknowledged and to be by his brother's side, a desire he feels was rejected. His other key relationships are with his Dark Princess teammates, who help him enact his plans, and with the original Princesses, especially Mikoto, whom he sees as an adversary but who also comes to understand him on a more personal level during moments of forced proximity.

Over the course of the series, Otoya undergoes a subtle but significant development. Initially presented as a confident and calculating strategist set on destruction and victory, layers of his personality are revealed that show a more vulnerable individual. In a pivotal moment, he is locked in a basement with Mikoto, and during their conversation, Mikoto begins to see that Otoya is not simply a villain but a person acting out of deep-seated pain. After successfully defeating his brother and becoming the new student council president, Otoya implements new rules that ban the Princesses and punish former council members. However, his victory is ultimately short-lived. When the original Princesses, having understood and embraced the true meaning of their role, reunite and challenge him, Otoya is forced to admit defeat. This final confrontation brings his revenge arc to a close. In his moment of defeat, he directly asks Arisada if he can now understand his feelings, signaling that his ultimate goal was never just power, but emotional validation. As for notable abilities, Otoya is a charismatic and persuasive leader, capable of rallying supporters and creating an effective rival organization. His skill in planning and executing a political campaign against the established Student Council demonstrates strategic thinking. He also shows an aptitude for performance, as the Dark Princesses engage in a live stage production as part of the school's election festivities.
