Description
Konaki Jijii originates from Japanese folklore, specifically the mountainous regions of Tokushima Prefecture, where he was described as a spirit that mimics the cry of an infant to lure unsuspecting travelers before crushing them with his rapidly increasing weight. Within the narrative of the anime, he is one of the most recognizable allies of Kitaro and a prominent fixture of the series. He is an elderly yokai of diminutive stature, standing roughly 140 centimeters tall, with a bald head, a face wrinkled like a baby, and a wispy white beard. His traditional attire consists of a straw raincoat and a bellyband, and he is seldom seen without his walking staff.
His personality is best described as good-natured and somewhat absent-minded. He is a heavy drinker who is rarely without his sake gourd, a habit that frequently leads to lazy, comedic behavior. This laid-back exterior, however, masks a dependable and protective ally. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and harbors a strong sense of justice, readily springing into action when the human world or the yokai world is threatened. His motivations are rooted in this sense of camaraderie and a desire for a peaceful existence, though his impatience often gets the best of him. He is a core member of the group of friendly yokai that aids Kitaro, acting as an experienced and protective senior figure.
He shares a famously deep relationship with Sunakake Babaa, a fellow elderly yokai. They are frequently depicted as an inseparable pair, functioning as an effective battlefield team and bickering like an old married couple, with their bond carrying strong undercurrents of romantic affection in several adaptations. He also maintains close ties with other friendly yokai such as Nurikabe, Ittan Momen, and Nezumi Otoko, though the latter often tests his patience. Over the course of the series, his character has seen significant development, transforming from a straightforward combatant into a master tactician of his unique ability, earning him the reputation of a powerful and experienced ally.
Konaki Jijii's primary and most famous ability is the power to transform his body into incredibly dense stone. In his normal state, he weighs very little, but upon activating this power, his mass increases dramatically, sometimes to several tons. His signature attack involves latching onto an enemy and wailing like a baby, causing his weight to multiply and effectively pinning or crushing his target. He can also petrify his entire body to become an immovable, highly durable shield, capable of withstanding gunfire and heavy impacts. As the series progressed, his control over this ability became extremely refined. He can selectively petrify only specific parts of his body, allowing him to land powerful strikes while remaining mobile. He can create stone spikes from his body for offense, use rapid petrification to outwit enemies who can turn others to stone, and even regenerate lost body parts. This combination of immense physical power, extreme durability, and tactical versatility makes him a formidable presence in battle.
