Description
Allison is a central character in The Grudge 2, portrayed as an American student attending an international school in Tokyo. Originally from Chicago, she is characterized as a newcomer who is somewhat awkward, shy, and lacking in confidence, often described as a wallflower who exists in the background of social situations. Her primary motivation throughout the story is a deep-seated desire for friendship and social acceptance, which leads her to seek out the company of more popular girls at her school.
Her role in the narrative begins when she follows two schoolmates, Vanessa and Miyuki, to a house infamous for being one of the most haunted locations in Japan. Vanessa, who is portrayed as a mean and popular girl, presents entering the house as a test for Allison to prove herself worthy of befriending their clique. What Allison believes is an opportunity for connection turns into a cruel prank when Vanessa and Miyuki lock her inside a closet in the house. While trapped, Allison encounters a vengeful ghost, an experience that marks her as the first of the three girls to be directly touched by the curse, though she is the third to ultimately be killed by it.
Following this traumatic event, Allison becomes visibly traumatized and begins visiting the school counselor for support. Her fear and anxiety make her a target for further taunting from Vanessa, who mocks her for her jumpy behavior and counseling sessions. When Miyuki disappears, a haggard and frightened Allison confronts Vanessa in the principal's office, breaking down in tears and blaming Vanessa for forcing her to enter the cursed house. In this moment, her desperate plea, asking what she ever did to deserve such treatment, highlights her sense of victimization and confusion.
Her key relationships are largely defined by this betrayal. Vanessa functions as an antagonist in Allison's life, a person whose approval she sought but who ultimately orchestrated her suffering. Miyuki exists as a secondary figure in this dynamic. The school principal, Dale, serves as a temporary source of comfort but is later revealed to be another victim of the curse. After Vanessa also vanishes, a knowing Allison returns to the principal, only to be told that her deceased friends are now in the room with her. As the ghosts of Vanessa and Miyuki appear, the principal transforms into a ghost as well, forcing a terrified Allison to flee back to her home in Chicago.
Her development across the film traces a tragic arc from an innocent, hopeful girl to a desperate and broken survivor. Believing she can escape the curse by returning to Chicago, she arrives home only to find that the vengeful spirits have followed her. Her psychological deterioration is marked by her attempts to resist the haunting, which include covering her apartment windows with newspapers and cutting off her own hair in a frantic effort to protect herself. Despite her resilience, she is ultimately unable to escape her fate. In a final confrontation, the primary ghost, Kayako, emerges from inside Allison's jacket and pulls her in, after which her body is never found. Her role extends beyond her own demise, as her flight to Chicago is directly responsible for spreading the curse to a new location, leading to the deaths of her parents and several neighbors. She possesses no supernatural abilities of her own, but her character is notable for her sustained resistance to the curse, surviving longer than many other victims before her eventual death.
