Description
Danjo Kouga is the elderly leader of the Kouga clan and the grandfather of the clan`s heir, Gennosuke Kouga. As the head of Kouga Manjidani, he is a figure of significant authority and experience, deeply entrenched in the generations-long conflict with the rival Iga clan.
In his youth, Danjo was once engaged to Ogen, the heir of the Iga clan. Despite the bitter hatred between their families, the two were genuinely in love and planned to marry in the hope of ending the ancient bloodshed. Their hopes were shattered during a nighttime meeting when Oda Nobunaga`s forces, with the secret aid of a faction within the Kouga clan, attacked and massacred the Iga village. Although Danjo was innocent and had no knowledge of the plot, the traumatized Ogen could not believe his claims, and their relationship was destroyed by this betrayal, turning their love into enduring hatred.
Decades later, Danjo is an old and wizened warrior with long white hair tied in a ponytail, prominent white eyebrows, and a long white beard. He typically wears a dark green kosode overlaid with a dark blue jinbaori, paired with dark hakama. Despite the tragedy of his past, he has not abandoned the dream of peace between the clans. He arranges for his grandson, Gennosuke, to become engaged to Ogen`s granddaughter, Oboro, hoping that this union will finally succeed where his own failed. This act demonstrates that beneath his hardened exterior, he retains an idealistic desire to end the cycle of revenge, a goal he shares with Gennosuke.
When the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu officially abolishes the peace treaty and forces the two clans to select ten warriors each to fight to the death, Danjos pragmatic and ruthless nature surfaces immediately. He agrees to the terms without hesitation and shows no mercy in the conflict that follows. He and Ogen meet privately after the edict is given, and their conversation is cut short when Danjo spits a poisonous needle directly into Ogens neck, launching a sneak attack the moment her back is turned. He strikes her name from the list of Iga warriors, gloating that her clan now only has nine fighters. This act signifies that any lingering affection he once held for her is gone, replaced by the harsh loyalty to his clan and the pragmatism of a seasoned ninja. The conflict ends with both Danjo and Ogen fatally wounding each other, their bodies drifting away together in a final, tragic reunion.
Throughout the story, Danjo`s role is that of a patriarch and a catalyst. He selects the ten best Kouga warriors to represent the clan and sends them into the deadly contest. His primary motivation is the survival and success of the Kouga clan, but he is also driven by a complex personal history with Ogen and a desire to see the feud resolved, even if through the arranged marriage of his grandson. His key relationships are with Ogen, his former love turned mortal enemy, and with Gennosuke, his heir whom he respects and believes in but with whom he does not share a particularly close bond.
Danjo is a master of senbonjutsu, the art of throwing needles. He can launch these needles with tremendous speed and accuracy, capable of piercing armor. His most distinctive technique involves spitting a poisoned needle from his mouth, a perfect method for a stealthy, surprise attack. He is also a skilled swordsman, demonstrated when he deflects incoming throwing stars with his blade.
