Description
Koshirou Chikuma is a member of the Iga Tsubagakure ninja clan. Though his official rank is that of a low-level gennin, his exceptional talent earns him a place among the ten elite warriors chosen by Iga leader Ogen to represent the clan in a deadly conflict against the rival Kouga clan. He was trained from a young age by Yakushiji Tenzen, a fearsome and nearly immortal ninja, and grew up alongside Oboro, the Iga princess, forming a close and protective bond with her.
In terms of personality, Koshirou is depicted as a diligent and capable ninja who retains a sense of compassion rare among his comrades. He is hesitant to fight opponents who are at a clear disadvantage, a trait that draws criticism from Tenzen, who insists that mercy has no place in ninja warfare. He is deeply loyal to Oboro and feels a strong duty to protect her, and he respects his master even when orders conflict with his own conscience. He also has a habit of biting his lower lip until it bleeds when under stress.
His motivations are rooted in his loyalty to his clan and his personal attachment to Oboro. He wishes to serve effectively and keep Oboro safe, but he often finds himself pulled between his obligations to Tenzen and his own moral reservations.
In the story, Koshirou serves as one of the Iga champions. He participates in several encounters, most notably facing Kouga Gennosuke, the leader of the Kouga clan. During their battle, Gennosuke uses his unique ability to react at superhuman speed, which results in Koshirou losing his sight. This event marks a significant turning point in his character arc.
Koshirou's key relationships include his friendship with Oboro, who sees him almost as an older brother, although his own feelings may be deeper. He is also close to Akeginu, Oboro's bodyguard, who loves him, but he remains largely oblivious to her romantic interest. His relationship with his master Tenzen is one of disciple and mentor, yet he is occasionally disturbed by Tenzen's cruel methods. His rivalry with Gennosuke is personal, as Gennosuke took his sight.
After losing his sight, Koshirou undergoes notable development. He becomes more somber and withdrawn, his once-cheerful demeanor replaced by a darker outlook. He adapts by honing his other senses and continues to fight despite his disability. He also takes up woodcarving as a way to cope and eventually becomes able to carve with the same skill he had before, using only his sense of touch.
Koshirou's most notable ability is his Kamaitachi technique, which allows him to create miniature tornadoes by sucking in air and expelling it, shredding anything caught in the vortex. He also wields a pair of kama, or hand sickles, which he can use in close combat or throw like boomerangs. He is described as the best weapons user among the Iga, relying on skill and technique rather than supernatural power.
