Description
Katsuo Mizuno is a first-year student at Seishun Academy, commonly known as Seigaku, where he is a member of the school's prestigious tennis club. He is recognized as one-third of the "Freshman Trio," a group of three first-year students who are close friends and ardent supporters of the team, the other two being Kachiro Kato and Satoshi Horio. Physically, Katsuo is initially distinguished by his extremely short, buzz-cut hair, which is blonde in the manga but black in the anime adaptation. As he advances to his second year, he grows his hair out and dyes it blonde. His height is recorded as 158 centimeters.
In terms of personality, Katsuo is depicted as a kind, polite, and generally soft-spoken individual. He demonstrates a mature demeanor for his age, often acting as a voice of reason and even scolding his more boisterous friend Horio for his poor table manners. Despite this maturity, he lacks confidence in his own abilities and has a tendency to attribute his successes to luck or coincidence rather than his own skill. However, this reserved nature transforms when the team needs support, as he becomes a passionate and vocal cheerleader for Seigaku, using his voice to stir up the crowd and encourage the regular players.
Katsuo's primary motivation is a deep admiration for the team and a quiet ambition to improve. While he is not among the most skilled players on the team, he harbors a persistent, if somewhat unconfident, dream of becoming a regular player one day. In the meantime, he dedicates himself fully to his duties as a club member, which include supporting the regulars at tournaments and picking up balls during practice without complaint. His role in the story is largely that of an observer and a devoted fan from within the club, particularly as a friend and enthusiastic supporter of fellow first-year prodigy, Ryoma Echizen.
His key relationships are centered on his two best friends. He is frequently seen with Kachiro Kato and Satoshi Horio, and the three form a tight-knit social unit within the larger tennis club. Together, they experience the ups and downs of club life, from witnessing intense matches to being on the receiving end of rigorous training. He holds deep respect for all the senior regulars, though he can be intimidated by some, such as the fearsome Kaidoh Kaoru, due to his intense demeanor. One notable incident highlighting his role as a reliable team member occurred during the Kanto Tournament, when he was nearly called upon to serve as a stand-in for the vice-captain, Shuichiro Oishi, who was running late.
While Katsuo does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, his development is subtly shown through his ongoing commitment to the team and his gradual growth as a player. His story is one of perseverance from the margins, where he diligently follows the training regimens, often alongside Kachiro, in an effort to improve. His notable abilities are not flashy tennis techniques; rather, they are his strengths of character. He is a dependable and hardworking individual with a notable talent for cooking in the anime adaptation. He serves as a constant, loyal presence for the Seigaku tennis team, embodying the spirit of its many unsung but essential members.
