Description
Manatsu Natsuumi moves from Minamino Island to Aozora City as a first-year middle school student. Her parents, Aoi and Taiyo, share her high energy and supportive nature. Manatsu exhibits extreme energy and motivation, frequently declaring she will do "what's important, right now" and acting before thinking, occasionally leading to recklessness. She struggles academically and dislikes studying, failing exams initially but later passing makeup tests to maintain club activities. Her signature catchphrase is "Tropica-Shine."
Physically, she has medium-length auburn hair in a side ponytail with a yellow bow, green eyes, and wears casual outfits like a white top with a hot pink neck strap and teal shorts. Transforming into Cure Summer alters her appearance: her hair grows long, turns blonde with hot pink ombre and blue streaks, and features a pink hibiscus flower. She gains pink lipstick as her charm point, heart-shaped flecks in her eyes, a cropped white shirt with a sailor-like collar, a ruffled skirt, and fingerless gloves. Cure Summer's theme color is rainbow, making her the first non-pink leader since Cure Black. Her transformation phrase is "Joyful everlasting summer! Cure Summer!"
As Cure Summer, she leads the Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure team. Her "Motivation Power" can be drained by enemies, causing apathy. She wields the Tropical Pact for transformation, requiring "Pretty Cure! Tropical Change!," and uses the Heart Kuru Ring during transformations. Her attacks involve the Heart Rouge Rod and group techniques with the Tropical Heart Dresser. In *Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure: The Snow Princess and the Miraculous Ring!*, she travels to the Snow Kingdom of Shantia after Princess Sharon's invitation, exploring the snow with enthusiasm. The team encounters the HeartCatch Pretty Cure, leading to initial tension but eventual collaboration against Sharon's snow monsters. When Laura receives the Snow Heart Kuru Ring from Sharon, it later transforms. United with HeartCatch, Cure Summer unlocks "Snow Crystal Tropical Style": longer, lighter hair with added ombre, a white-and-pink scalloped capelet, a light pink gradient skirt, rainbow wings, and bare feet with ribbons. The teams perform "Heart Shining Orchestra" using the ring and collective energy, purifying Sharon and resolving the conflict. After Sharon disappears, Manatsu's team returns to Aozora City and honors her by performing Shantia's song at a mall event.
Manatsu instantly befriends Laura upon discovering she is a mermaid, though their friendship strains when Manatsu neglects duties. They reconcile after Manatsu saves Laura from a villain. She bonds quickly with classmates Sango Suzumura and Minori Ichinose, admiring Asuka Takizawa, who initially resists joining the team but accepts Manatsu's friendship. Her childhood included a significant encounter with Laura on Minamino Island, forgotten until their reunion.
Manatsu grows by regaining lost motivation through friendships, confronting her fear of ghosts, and learning to balance impulsiveness with responsibility. Her determination to protect others and uphold promises remains consistent, seen in her leadership during the film and commitment to the Tropical Club.
