Description
Katsuya Tokunaga is a character who appears in the 2002 Japanese horror film Ju-on: The Grudge, serving as a tragic figure whose encounter with the supernatural curse leads to his demise and corruption. He is the husband of Kazumi Tokunaga, the brother of Hitomi Tokunaga, and the son of Sachie Tokunaga, having moved into the cursed house with his family sometime after previous tragic incidents occurred there.

In terms of background, Katsuya is presented as an ordinary man who becomes an unwitting victim of the vengeful household spirits. His personality is not extensively developed before the curse takes hold, but glimpses suggest he is a concerned husband who initially reacts with fear and confusion when confronted with the supernatural. Upon returning home from work, he discovers his wife lying on a bed in a state of shock, unable to move or speak, with her eyes wide open. As he prepares to call for an ambulance, Katsuya senses another presence in the room and encounters the ghostly boy Toshio Saeki. He asks who the child is but receives no response as closet doors begin to shake violently. His wife deteriorates further, rising briefly before falling back and becoming still.

Katsuya's motivations throughout the film are primarily driven by survival and concern for his family, though these are quickly overwhelmed by the curse. As he huddles fearfully in a corner, his facial expression suddenly transforms, taking on an evil quality as the shadow of something descending from the ceiling falls upon him. This moment marks his possession by a malevolent force, believed to be the spirit of Takeo Saeki, who murdered his own wife Kayako before being killed himself.

His role in the story is significant as both a victim of the curse and a conduit for its spread. When his sister Hitomi arrives for dinner and calls for him and Kazumi, she finds him sitting on the stairs behaving strangely. Katsuya mutters obsessively about his wife cheating on him and raising a child that is not his, paranoid delusions that reflect the jealous rage of the spirit possessing him rather than his own true feelings. He carries Kazumi's limp body into another room, and when Hitomi asks about her sister-in-law, Katsuya absent-mindedly tells her that it is a bad time for a visit and ushers her out of the house. Later, Katsuya walks up the stairs toward the room where his wife's body lies with an evil expression on his face as the ghostly visage of Kayako appears in a window.

Key relationships define much of his narrative arc. His marriage to Kazumi is central to his tragedy, as he becomes the instrument of her death while under supernatural influence. His bond with his sister Hitomi proves equally important, as she later becomes haunted by an apparition of Katsuya. After being tormented at her workplace, Hitomi locks herself in her apartment only to be tricked by what she believes is her brother outside, showing how the curse uses familiar forms to claim its victims.

Regarding character development, Katsuya undergoes a horrifying transformation from a frightened but normal husband into a vessel for vengeful spirits. The possession fundamentally alters his personality, replacing his evident concern for his wife with irrational jealousy and malevolence. His fate is ultimately discovered when detectives investigating the house trace the sound of his ringing mobile phone to the attic, where they find his body alongside Kazumi's.

Notable abilities possessed by Katsuya are not supernatural in origin, as he is portrayed as an ordinary human. However, after being possessed, he exhibits unnatural strength and behavior, carrying his wife's body and moving through the house with an expression and demeanor that are decidedly inhuman. Later, after his death, an apparition of Katsuya appears to haunt his sister, demonstrating how the curse claims its victims and then uses their forms to continue spreading its influence. This phantom retains his appearance but serves the will of the malevolent spirits inhabiting the house, existing as one of the many ghosts trapped within the recurring cycle of violence and vengeance that defines the curse.
