Description
Detective Igarashi is a supporting character who appears in the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge and its American remake, The Grudge. His full first name is Daisuke. Igarashi is a police detective who works alongside his partner, Detective Nakagawa, and the two of them are frequently seen conducting investigations together.

In the narrative, Igarashi is introduced when the police are called to the Saeki house following the discovery of a traumatized social worker, Rika Nishina, and the dead body of Sachie Tokunaga. Together with Nakagawa, he searches the property and is present when the bodies of Katsuya and Kazumi Tokunaga are found in the attic. His role in the story is primarily functional, serving as an agent of law enforcement who methodically uncovers the tragic history associated with the cursed house.

Igarashi’s personality is characterized by a professional and diligent commitment to his duties. As the investigation deepens, he takes on the role of gathering historical information, reporting to Nakagawa about the missing Hitomi Tokunaga and the death of a security guard at her workplace. He is also the one who retrieves old case files on the original Saeki family murders, revealing that the boy Toshio went missing while his parents were found dead five years prior. This action demonstrates his investigative competence and his drive to understand the present horrors by looking into the past. He recruits former detective Yuji Toyama, the only surviving officer from the original Saeki investigation, in an attempt to gain deeper insight into the case.

The key relationship in Igarashi’s story is with his partner, Detective Nakagawa. The two function as a cohesive unit, sharing information and working side-by-side. His relationship with Yuji Toyama is also significant, as Igarashi respects Toyama's prior experience and seeks him out for his specialized knowledge. The central development for Igarashi, as with nearly all characters who encounter the curse, is his eventual demise. After leaving Toyama alone to watch a security tape, Igarashi and Nakagawa later go to the Saeki house looking for him. Upon arriving, they find a terrified Toyama being haunted by the ghost of Kayako Saeki. As they attempt to intervene, the ghost turns its attention to the two detectives, leading to them being taken by the vengeful spirit. In the timeline of the American remake, Igarashi’s fate is less directly shown but is implied to be similar, as his partner Nakagawa is later haunted by Kayako through a security tape and ultimately killed. Igarashi does not reappear following the events at the Saeki house, suggesting he suffered the same fate as his colleagues.

Detective Igarashi does not possess any supernatural abilities. His notable traits are his professional skills as a detective, including his persistence in gathering evidence, his willingness to consult historical records, and his collaboration with other officers to solve a mystery. These ordinary human qualities are what define his role as an investigator who, despite his best efforts, is ultimately powerless against the supernatural curse he is trying to understand.
