Olmar, younger son of wealthy landowner Ketil, is initially arrogant yet insecure. Desperate for recognition through combat despite lacking swordsmanship skills and having no plans to leave home, his need to prove himself stems from feeling treated like a child. This makes him easily manipulated by promises of manhood, leading him to agree to an attempt on Einar and Thorfinn's lives, though he panics and retreats when confronted. Visiting King Canute in Jelling, Olmar requests to join the king's forces, hoping to emulate his older brother Thorgil. He fails to cleanly slash a pig carcass during a demonstration. Canute identifies Olmar as a useful pawn to provoke Ketil's family into treason, justifying seizing their assets. Canute's messenger Brodd baits Olmar into attacking him. Olmar lands a fatal blow purely by luck when another soldier blinds Brodd with a coin, resulting in Olmar's stunned and traumatized first kill. Returning to Ketil's farm, Olmar witnesses the brutal reality of Canute's invasion. This shatters his illusions of combat, forcing him to acknowledge his unsuitability for battle. When Ketil is incapacitated, Olmar exercises his authority as legal heir to surrender the farm, accepting exile to prevent further bloodshed. During the surrender, he observes Thorfinn negotiating peacefully with Canute's forces. Thorfinn's commitment to non-violence profoundly impacts Olmar, who later expresses a desire to emulate him. After the conflict, Olmar assumes management of the farm due to Ketil's condition. He takes responsibility by compensating the families of those killed or injured, reducing his family's wealth and land holdings by half. His final depicted role involves performing manual labor in the fields, reflecting a shift from seeking martial glory to embracing stewardship and hard work.
