TV-Series
Description
Urushi Yaotome, a second-year high school student, serves as president of the shogi club. She learned shogi from her grandfather in childhood, often visiting his friend's okonomiyaki shop with him.
She possesses lilac-colored hair, brown eyes, and stands 149 cm tall, a height unchanged since middle school that causes her significant insecurity. Hoping to reach 150 cm, she drank milk consistently, yet measurements always showed 149.7 cm. Ayumu Tanaka once lied, claiming she was 150 cm to avoid upsetting her. She wears a school sailor uniform and is sensitive about her petite physique.
Academically proficient, she typically ranks within the top three in her class without intensive studying, attributing this to mental exercises like solving shogi problems. However, she struggles physically, describing herself as unathletic and prone to tripping, with sit-ups being her only average physical skill.
Her personality blends confidence in shogi with emotional vulnerability. She maintains a cheerful demeanor but flusters easily, particularly when Ayumu directly compliments her cuteness. She possesses a covertly mischievous side, occasionally entertaining suggestive thoughts about Ayumu's interactions with others. Despite suspecting Ayumu likes her, she initially denied reciprocal feelings. Her romantic realization occurred during a school trip to Kyoto when she lost a charm Ayumu gave her. After retrieving it under blooming cherry trees, she acknowledged her love for him and confessed this to her friend Maki.
As shogi club president, she prioritized gaining official recognition, which required four members. Initially comprising only herself and Ayumu, the club later expanded with additions like Rin Kagawa, achieving official status. Her shogi skills are exceptional, honed through years of practice. She once won a simultaneous "Speed Shogi" match against Ayumu, Takeru Kakuryu, and Rin, collapsing from exhaustion afterward.
Her relationship with Ayumu forms her core character development. She repeatedly attempts to coax a confession from him while concealing her own feelings. After Takeru confesses to Sakurako during a shogi training camp, Urushi sneaks into Ayumu's room intending to kiss him but is interrupted. Later, during rain-disrupted festival fireworks, she kisses his cheek instead. She experiences jealousy when other girls interact with Ayumu, particularly after Rin joins the club and expresses interest in him.
Competitively, she initially defeats Ayumu consistently, even with handicaps. After losing to him under a six-piece handicap, she insisted on maintaining that disadvantage. Ayumu later negotiated reducing the handicap to four pieces as a "wish" after another loss, narrowing their skill gap. She participated in tournaments, winning her initial matches and advancing with her team to the top 16.
Upon graduating, she passed the shogi club presidency to Ayumu.
