Description
Ichigo Shirayuri is a high school student and one of the two protagonists of the story. A second-year student at Shimotsuma Oume High School, she is a member of a female biker gang known as the Ponytails, identifying as a Yanki, a Japanese delinquent subculture known for its rebellious attitude and modified school uniforms. Despite her tough exterior, her real name is Ichigo, which means strawberry, but due to shyness, she introduces herself to others as Ichiko. Her family background is not deeply explored, though her life in the rural town of Shimotsuma is a significant factor in her story, as she finds the environment stiflingly dull.
In terms of personality, Ichigo presents a stark contrast to her friend Momoko. She is surly, wears black lipstick and punk attire, and rides a motorcycle. Her tough and scary appearance, however, masks a more vulnerable interior shaped by childhood insecurities. While she acts as a juvenile delinquent, she possesses a strong sense of loyalty and a desperate need for real friendship and authority figures. She is known for being caring and loyal to her friends, though her blunt and abrasive manner often hides this. Despite her rebellious image, she is not academically inclined and has poor handwriting, a detail that reflects her struggles with formal education.
Ichigo’s motivations are rooted in a desire for belonging and transformation. It is revealed that she was not always a delinquent. In middle school, she was a timid student who was frequently bullied. Her transformation began one night while recklessly riding her bicycle; after getting a flat tire, she met Akimi, the leader of the Ponytails. Akimi’s strict but kind advice and comfort inspired Ichigo, leading her to decide, "I want to be like that person." This encounter drove her to become a Yanki, adopting the biker lifestyle as a way to shed her former weak self and find strength and camaraderie. Her friendship with Momoko further challenges her, pushing her to confront her own identity.
Within the story, Ichigo serves as the impulsive and down-to-earth foil to Momoko’s Rococo-obsessed and delicate Lolita. Their friendship begins when Ichigo responds to an advertisement Momoko places to sell counterfeit designer clothing. Despite their opposite personalities and interests, they develop an unlikely bond. Her role often involves dragging Momoko out of her isolated world, such as taking her to pachinko parlors, while simultaneously being pulled into Momoko’s world of high fashion and embroidery.
Key relationships define much of her arc. Her relationship with Momoko Ryugasaki is central to the story; what begins as a transactional customer-seller dynamic deepens into a genuine friendship where they support each other despite constant bickering. Akimi, the former leader of the Ponytails, is a crucial figure in her past, serving as the mentor whose strength Ichigo aspired to emulate. When Akimi retires to get married, leadership of the Ponytails passes to Miko, whose violent and power-hungry leadership style contrasts sharply with Akimi’s. Ichigo also briefly falls in love with a man named Ryuji, only to learn he is engaged to Akimi, leading to a moment of heartbreak.
Ichigo undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. Initially, her identity is entirely wrapped up in being a member of the Ponytails. However, as she grows closer to Momoko and becomes disillusioned with the gang’s new direction under Miko, she decides to leave. This decision is a sign of her growing independence, choosing her own path over the group conformity of the gang. Her friendship with Momoko leads her to new opportunities. After visiting Tokyo with Momoko, she is scouted to model for Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, despite initially hating being forced to wear Lolita clothing. This part-time modeling career further alienates her from the Ponytails, cementing her break from that life.
As for notable abilities, Ichigo is a capable motorcyclist and is physically tough, a necessity for her life as a delinquent. She is skilled in the rituals and codes of the biker gang subculture, including the acceptance of challenges. While not an artist herself, her reliance on loyalty and physical presence forms the core of her skill set. Ultimately, she is defined less by special powers and more by her resilience and her capacity for deep loyalty, which allows her to navigate the violent expectations of the Ponytails while also being a steadfast friend to Momoko.
