Description
Momoko's father is a former low-level yakuza and former member of a biker gang, or yanki, who failed his initiation into the criminal syndicate. After getting into legal trouble for selling counterfeit goods, specifically fake Versace apparel that he produced himself, he was forced to move his family from their hometown of Amagasaki to the rural town of Shimotsuma, where he lives with his mother and his daughter, Momoko. Her mother left the family long ago, running off with the doctor who delivered Momoko. To make a living, he operates a small-scale bootlegging business from home, peddling knockoff designer items that are often patently fake, such as shirts with blatantly misspelled logos like Versach.
Personally, he is depicted as a bumbling, pathetic figure who lacks any real parental authority. He is not a strict or responsible father; instead, he is largely ineffectual and comically inept, especially in his attempts at criminal enterprise. Despite these shortcomings, he shares a strange, unspoken mutual understanding with Momoko. He does not interfere with her eccentric lifestyle and appears to accept her obsession with Rococo-era France and Lolita fashion with a distant but functional tolerance. His failures as a provider and as a criminal underscore the chaotic household environment that drives Momoko to retreat into her own world of beauty and fantasy. He is largely static as a character; his role is to serve as a comedic catalyst and to provide the initial familial disruption that forces Momoko and her grandmother to move to Shimotsuma, setting the stage for the central friendship with Ichigo.
His key relationships are with his daughter and his own mother, Momoko's grandmother. He maintains a distant but functional bond with Momoko, and he is often shown interacting with his mother, who is far more pragmatic and sharp-tongued than him. He does not undergo significant development over the course of the story, remaining a consistent, largely unchanging background presence. A notable ability he possesses is a talent for counterfeit production; he is able to sew and produce convincing (or at least marketable) knockoff clothing, and he is credited with teaching Momoko the embroidery skills that later become central to her identity and her eventual bond with Ichigo. His incompetence as a gangster and as a father, combined with his surprising skill in needlework, define him as a source of both humor and the practical foundation for Momoko's own artistry.
