The character known as Glen in the Japanese version of the original Transformers anime corresponds to the Decepticon called Hook in the English version. Glen is a member of the Constructicons, a specialized unit of six Decepticons who work in construction and engineering. Within this team, Glen serves as the medic or combat medic, sometimes referred to as a medical soldier or orderly. His primary vehicle mode is a large mobile crane, and in this form he can attach the head component of the combined robot Devastator to become a "Double Cannon Crane".

Glen’s primary motivation is the pursuit of technical perfection and the application of his craft. His role in the Decepticon forces is that of a precision specialist. While all Constructicons are builders, Glen is specifically noted for his expertise in precision work. His abilities as an engineer and technician are so renowned that he has been entrusted by the Decepticon leader Megatron with modifying Megatron’s own fusion cannon. The respect for his skill even crosses faction lines; on an occasion when he was controlled by the Autobots, the highly capable Autobot engineer Wheeljack expressed admiration for Glen's craftsmanship. In combat, he wields a handgun-type weapon called the Beam Thunder and a rocket launcher.

Glen’s key relationships are primarily with his fellow Constructicons. Although the team is typically led by Scrapper, some fans have argued that Glen’s superior intelligence and technical mastery would make him a more suitable leader. Nevertheless, his arrogant and condescending attitude likely creates friction, especially with those he considers less sophisticated. His most significant structural relationship is with the team as a whole, as he forms the head and upper torso (the shoulders and chest) of the mighty combination robot Devastator, giving him a critical role in forming the giant's cognitive center.
