Description
Hayato Ichimonji, the character who transforms into Kamen Rider 2 in the film Kamen Rider The First, is a reimagining of the classic hero from the original television series. In this interpretation, his background is significantly altered and tied directly to tragedy. He was originally a man named Katsuhiko Yano, the fiancé of a reporter named Asuka Midorikawa. After Yano was killed by a Shocker monster called Spider, his lifeless body was recovered by the evil organization Shocker. They reconstructed him into a powerful cyborg, similar to their previous creation, Takeshi Hongo. As part of this process, his brain was altered, and he was given a new identity and memories as Hayato Ichimonji, erasing his past life and his relationship with Asuka.

The personality of this version of Ichimonji is complex and initially antagonistic. Unlike the more straightforward hero of the original series, he begins as a snide, cynical, and somewhat womanizing figure who is content in his role as an operative for Shocker. He dutifully accepts his mission to track down and eliminate Takeshi Hongo, the first Kamen Rider who escaped from Shocker. He is portrayed as a man who has accepted his monstrous nature, but this begins to change when he encounters Asuka. Because his appearance is identical to her deceased fiancé, he manipulates her emotions while also finding himself genuinely drawn to her. This growing attachment leads him to disobey Shocker's orders, ultimately branding him a traitor to the organization.

Ichimonji's primary role in the story is that of a rival-turned-reluctant-ally to the protagonist, Takeshi Hongo. Sent to kill Hongo, their confrontations force both men to confront their shared condition as Shocker's cyborgs. After being saved from execution by Hongo, he feels a sense of gratitude and joins him in a hesitant partnership to rescue Asuka from Shocker's headquarters. His motivations are chiefly personal: he seeks to protect Asuka, whom he has come to care for, and to survive the "wasting disease," a debilitating condition that all of Shocker's cyborgs suffer from without regular treatments from the organization's scientists. This physical deterioration is a constant threat, making his eventual turn against Shocker a potentially fatal act of defiance.

His key relationships drive much of his character arc. His connection with Asuka is central, transforming from a tool of manipulation into a genuine and selfless affection that redeems him. His relationship with Takeshi Hongo evolves from enmity to a brotherhood born of shared tragedy and purpose. Despite his initial reluctance and self-preserving instincts, he learns to trust and fight alongside Hongo, culminating in them becoming the legendary Double Riders. In the sequel, Kamen Rider The Next, their bond is established yet strained by two years of isolation, with Ichimonji hiding his worsening physical condition while still ultimately coming to Hongo's aid.

Ichimonji undergoes a significant development from a willing villain to an anti-hero, and finally, a true hero. Initially, he is a man who deceives for his own gain and retreats when a battle becomes too dangerous. However, after witnessing Hongo's unwavering will to fight for justice and to save another person, he experiences a change of heart. He abandons his cynical pragmatism, returns to save Hongo from defeat, and finds the courage to fight for a cause greater than himself. By the end of The First, he chooses to disappear, leaving his helmet behind as a symbolic end to his past as a Shocker pawn, and wishing Hongo and Asuka well for their future.

As Kamen Rider 2, Ichimonji possesses abilities comparable to those of Kamen Rider 1. As a cyborg modeled after a grasshopper, he has superhuman strength, speed, and jumping power. His transformation is facilitated by the Typhoon Belt, which generates power from wind pressure. While his original counterpart in the tv series was known as the "Power of 2" for his superior physical strength compared to Kamen Rider 1, the film version focuses more on his combat parity with Hongo. He is a highly skilled fighter, proficient in martial arts and judo even before his modification. In combat, he can execute techniques like the Rider Punch and the Rider Kick, and alongside Kamen Rider 1, they can perform the powerful Double Rider Kick finisher. However, his abilities are constantly threatened by his body's rejection of its cybernetic enhancements, which causes him physical deterioration and makes him reliant on his transformation suit to fight at full capacity.
