Description
Kenzô Morita is a central figure in the narrative as the head doctor and founder of the Morita Hospital. His professional life as a surgeon is the catalyst for the film's supernatural events, beginning when he is called upon to operate on a young girl with a massive, unexplained tumor on her stomach. During the procedure, Dr. Morita makes the first incision and accidentally cuts his thumb on the scalpel when the tumor moves. In the ensuing chaos, the tumor opens to reveal a human eye, and a young woman's head emerges from the child's body, announcing herself as Tomie.

Dr. Morita’s reaction to this event is defined by a scientific curiosity. Rather than succumbing immediately to fear, he preserves Tomie's living head in a large tank of solution and sets up an ever-running video camera to document the phenomenon. His journal becomes a key piece of the story, as it contains a detailed record of Tomie's discovery and the horrifying events that followed. His actions demonstrate a man attempting to apply rational inquiry to an utterly irrational being, a pursuit that ultimately leads to his disappearance.

His personality before the incident is that of a dedicated doctor and man of science, but his encounter with Tomie reduces him to a shadow of his former self. He becomes a "quivering shell," broken by the exposure to Tomie's evil and seductive power, which drives men to obsession and madness. The primary relationship that defines him is his role as the father of Yumi Morita, who becomes the protagonist as she arrives at the hospital to search for him after he vanishes. Her investigation into his fate, guided by his journal, forms the backbone of the story. Another key relationship is with his mistress and his estranged wife Yoko, both of whom Yumi encounters during her search for answers.

Throughout the film, Dr. Morita does not develop as an active character, as he is already broken and missing for the majority of the narrative. His development is instead revealed retroactively through his journal entries, which chart his descent from a composed professional into a man undone by Tomie. His notable abilities lie in his surgical skill and his scientific approach to the supernatural, specifically his decision to contain and study Tomie rather than simply destroy or flee from her. This decision, however, proves to be his undoing, as it facilitates her rebirth and spread, and he is reduced to a pitiable state, driven mad by the very force he sought to understand.
