Shun Sugata

Description
Born on February 17, 1955 in Yamanashi, Japan, Shun Sugata is a character actor and voice performer whose birth name is Masamichi Shibuya. He is represented by the talent agency T-artist. Sugata began his career after graduating from Tokyo Keizai University and joining the Toei Company, where he studied under actor Bunta Sugawara. His stage name is derived from the surnames of Sugawara, actor Koji Tsuruta, and Toei producer Koji Shundo. He later shifted his focus to stage work by joining the Situation Theatre troupe led by Karo Tanguchi before returning to on-screen performances in 1987 with the film Abunai Deka.

While Sugata is primarily known as a live-action film actor, he has an established body of voice work in anime, video games, and tokusatsu productions. He is frequently cast in violent or villainous roles, a typecasting that is reinforced by his deep, gruff vocal quality and imposing physical stature. One of his most significant voice roles is the character Ryo Murasame, also known as Kamen Rider ZX. He first portrayed this role in the 1984 television special Birth of the 10th! Kamen Riders All Together!!, and he reprised the character thirty years later in the 2014 film Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Wars feat. Super Sentai, where he also provided the voice for Ambassador Darkness. Additional anime and film voice credits from the early 2000s include Matsuda in the series Alive and Kenzô Morita in Tomie: Replay.

Beyond his work in Japanese productions, Sugata has appeared in several international films. He had minor roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 as Boss Benta, as well as a role in The Last Samurai. He has also maintained a recurring collaboration with the Yakuza video game series, providing the voice for the character Lin Hong and others across multiple installments including the original Yakuza, Yakuza 2, Yakuza: Dead Souls, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, as well as the character Takeda Kanbutsusai in Yakuza: Ishin!.
