Description
Grethe Wenzel serves as a 27-year-old officer in the Federal Republic of Giad's military. Heir to the family-owned Wenzel Heavy Industries military-industrial complex, this status earned her the derogatory nickname "Arms Dealer" among colleagues. Her background includes service as a pilot in the Giadian Air Force before the revolution, later transferring to the Army following the Empire's collapse. Early in the war against the Legion, she piloted the Vánagandr tank. Witnessing comrades die due to its slowness drove her to develop faster, more effective Feldreß units to reduce casualties.
A personal tragedy profoundly shaped her path: the Legion claimed her fiancé shortly before their wedding. After his death, she piloted the two-seater Vánagandr alone, refusing any other gunner, leading to the nicknames "Black Widow" and "Spider Woman." She carries his ring and dog tags around her neck as mementos.
Her engineering expertise resulted in the XM2 Reginleif, a high-performance Juggernaut designed to surpass older models. However, its notorious difficulty caused test pilot fatalities and injuries during trials under her command in the 1028th Trial Unit. She later designed the XC-1 Nachzehrer, a specialized low-altitude aircraft vital against the Legion. Technically skilled, she personally piloted these machines, becoming the only Federacy pilot capable of operating the Nachzehrer during the mission to destroy the Morpho cannon.
Grethe rose from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel, appointed commander of the Nordlicht Squadron, then brigade commander of the Federacy's Eighty-Sixth Strike Package, overseeing former Republic soldiers. Unlike many aristocratic Federacy officers, she showed consistent compassion towards the Eighty-Six, opposing their deployment as child soldiers and criticizing the Nordlicht Squadron's suicide mission against the Morpho. Her leadership emphasized shared sacrifice, telling Spearhead Squadron survivors she would fight alongside them if they chose to battle to the end.
Her relationships with fellow officers were complex; old friend Willem Ehrenfried once proposed and coined the "Black Widow" nickname. Despite a warm, amicable personality, she displayed bold recklessness, such as flying an unarmed transport plane to drop the Nordlicht Squadron into Legion territory. Her combat skills remained exceptional; after crash-landing the Nachzehrer, she survived encounters with multiple Legion armored companies while piloting a Reginleif solo.
