Description
Kaneko is a disgraced former police officer who has become a gunman for the yakuza. His history with law enforcement ended when he lost his service pistol, an infraction that led to his dismissal from the force. Following this professional and personal downfall, he fell into a state of deep depression. He was eventually taken in and given a new purpose by Anjo, a powerful yakuza boss, which is why he subsequently joined the criminal organization.

In contrast to the overtly sadistic and flamboyant personalities that populate the film's underworld, Kaneko is portrayed as a more grounded and stoic figure. He carries the weight of his circumstances with a gruff demeanor, representing a sense of old-school yakuza values and a man trying to navigate a world that has descended into chaotic madness. His primary, grounding motivation is his role as a single father to his young son, Takeshi. His actions are largely driven by a sense of duty—first to his former savior, Anjo, and consistently to the welfare of his child, for whom he must provide.

Within the story, Kaneko serves as a pivotal, if reluctant, player in the escalating conflict. Recruited by the steadfast yakuza member Takayama, he is tasked with hunting down the elusive and brutal killer Ichi. His investigation, however, leads to a profound and ironic personal revelation: Ichi is revealed to be his long-lost brother. This discovery deeply complicates his role, as he is forced to confront a blood relative who has become a monstrous, manipulated weapon.

Kaneko's most significant relationship is with his son Takeshi. The bond between them provides the film's most emotionally empathetic thread, as Kaneko is shown caring for the boy and speaking with him on the phone. In a cruel twist of fate, Takeshi’s own path crosses with Ichi's when the killer saves the young boy from a group of bullies. This act of salvation from his own brother creates a tragic, unknowing connection between the three. His other key relationship is with his estranged brother, Ichi. This familial link ultimately seals Kaneko's fate, positioning him not as a victor but as a tragic victim.

The character undergoes a tragic arc from a man seeking redemption and stability to a casualty of the senseless violence surrounding him. Initially a sympathetic figure—a good man forced into bad circumstances to survive and support his family—he is shown as perhaps the most human character left in a depraved world. As he closes in on Ichi, he is not driven by the same sadistic impulses as others but by a sense of duty and, later, by the horrifying realization of their kinship. In the final confrontation, he manages to shoot Ichi, but this action triggers a violent rage in his brother. In response, Ichi kills Kaneko in a sudden and brutal manner.

In terms of abilities, Kaneko is distinguished by his proficiency with firearms, a skill set inherited from his training as a police officer. Within the yakuza, he serves specifically as a gunman, positioning him as a dangerous antagonist to the knife-wielding Ichi. His competence with a gun makes him a credible threat in the film's violent world, even though his more conventional skills ultimately prove no match for Ichi’s psychotic, superhuman fury.
