Description
Abe no Seimei is the foremost onmyoji of the Heian period capital, a master of the esoteric art of onmyodo who serves the imperial court as a protector against supernatural threats. It is widely said that his mother was a kitsune, a fox spirit, and this heritage is a source of both his immense power and the social isolation he endures. His appearance carries a faintly vulpine quality, and he is often dressed in beautifully colored and patterned court robes, wearing a sly, knowing expression that hints at his amusement with the world. Seimei possesses a calm, rational, and strategic mind, rarely acting impulsively. His outward demeanor is often cool, stoic, and detached, which can be perceived as arrogant or stone-hearted, though he can also be friendly and courteous. He has a mischievous, occasionally sadistic streak, taking subtle pleasure in the discomfort of others or the absurdity of their situations. Beneath this hardened exterior lies a fundamentally caring and principled individual. A key line from his story reveals his philosophy: without demons, human life would be pretty dull. His childhood was traumatic: he was bullied for being a fox child and later blamed when a demon attacked his group, experiences that taught him he would always be an outsider. The most significant relationship in his life is his close friendship with the nobleman Minamoto no Hiromasa, who acts as his morality pet; Seimei consistently acts to protect the human world because of their bond. In terms of abilities, Seimei is the most powerful onmyoji of his era. He uses paper talismans inscribed with his signature pentagram to erect powerful barriers, performs divination and astrology, and can break curses. He is highly skilled in creating shikigami, binding spirits to objects or living things to serve him; he famously created attendants from wisteria flowers and from a butterfly brought back to life. He can also perform powerful rituals such as the Taizan Fukun no Sai to resurrect the dead and invoke the Four Gods to create barriers. His greatest strength is his ability to remain strategically composed when facing a superior threat.
