Description
Ran Saotome is a young woman in the television series Chōseishin GranSazer who fights as one of the twelve warriors known as the GranSazers. She is twenty years old, a college student, and also works as a street dancer, having dreamed since childhood of becoming a professional dancer at the top level. She was born on September 22 and carries the sign of Virgo, which matches her transformation identity: she fights as Sazer Visuel, the Virgo warrior of the Earth Tribe, and she is the last member of that tribe to awaken. Her personality is generally gentle, cheerful, and approachable, though she also has a quirky, impulsive side, and she is known for the warm and sympathetic way she treats others.

Ran becomes involved in the story's conflict after her childhood friend Junya is accused of taking part in a robbery worth tens of millions of yen. The case is investigated by Gou Kamiya, a police officer who is himself a GranSazer, and it is through this incident that Ran first comes into contact with the larger struggle between the warriors and extraterrestrial forces. Early on, she is taken in by Saeki Karin, who presents herself as an ally, but Ran leaves that group when she realizes Karin cannot help her or clear her friend's name. Her own power awakens while she moves to protect Gou, at which point she transforms for the first time as Sazer Visuel. With her name cleared, she joins the Earth Tribe alongside Gou and the solitary fighter Naoto Matsuzaka. Among the tribes, she is especially cooperative with and sympathetic to the Flame Tribe, and her friendly nature helps bridge the divisions between warriors who initially distrust one another.

As a fighter, Ran relies on speed and agility rather than raw strength. Her personal weapon is the Lady Claw, a set of clawlike weapons suited to her quick style, and her armor is modeled after the leopard. Her finishing technique, the Night Razing Claw, combines quickness with force and is frequently shown turning the outcome of important battles. Like all GranSazers, she gains greatly enhanced physical abilities when armored; in that form she stands about 165 centimeters tall and can make jumps of roughly 18 meters vertically and 100 meters horizontally.

Ran's most distinctive contribution to the team, however, is not combat. She is secretly the Communicator, a GranSazer with the rare ability to touch the Crystal Slab and draw information from it, including knowledge of the ancient war that shaped the GranSazers and insight into the plans and movements of the alien alliance called the Warp Monarch. This power makes her indispensable for planning the team's tactics and gives her a special role as a force for harmony in the conflict. It also makes her a target: in the later part of the story, enemy figures recognize her as the key to communicating with the will of the Warp Monarch and attempt to eliminate her. The alien envoy Ruby comes to Earth specifically to protect Ran and to use her as a conduit to convey the truth to the Warp Monarch. During this period, the enemy Brighton falsely accuses Ran of being a Bosquito and tries to have her killed, forcing the other GranSazers to guard her closely.

Over the course of the series, Ran develops from an ordinary student and dancer caught up in events beyond her understanding into a confident and dependable warrior whose compassion helps hold the growing team together. She becomes the strategic and emotional center of the final confrontation, and her communication ability plays a decisive part in exposing the truth and bringing the conflict to an end. In her personal life, she remains loyal to her childhood friend, shares a close working bond with Gou, and develops a mutual fondness with Ken Shidou of the Flame Tribe, who is plainly drawn to her. Her motivation throughout is rooted in protecting the people she cares about and helping restore peace, and it is this blend of gentleness and resolve that defines her as a character.
