Description
Michael is an android who serves as the secondary antagonist in the 1995 Japanese film Mechanical Violator Hakaider. He was created by the tyrannical ruler Gurjev to serve as the public security commander of Jesus Town, a pseudo-utopian city built on the ruins of Jerusalem. Michael leads the city's military police and enforces its oppressive laws. He was built as a replacement for Hakaider, a previous android who rebelled against Gurjev because he believed in free will rather than the forced peace imposed by the regime. Michael is therefore Hakaider's successor and direct counterpart, designed to be more obedient and effective at maintaining control.
Michael's personality is defined by a rigid dedication to order and a conviction that his actions are just. He does not question his mission or his master. He believes that peace must be enforced, even if that means stripping people of their free will, and he regards any resistance as chaos that must be crushed. When he finally confronts Hakaider directly, Michael openly states that order is justice, showing that he genuinely sees himself as righteous rather than villainous. This self-righteousness makes him a cold and merciless enforcer. His motivations are not personal ambition but a programmed loyalty to Gurjev's vision of total control, along with his own commitment to the principle that stability must come before individual liberty.
In the story, Michael functions as Hakaider's primary rival and the main obstacle to the rebellion. He is first shown capturing a man who attempts suicide, a dissenter who is later revealed to be one of many citizens scheduled for forced lobotomy. Michael is present at key turning points in the plot, and he is the one who severely wounds the rebel Kaoru after the attack on the rebel hideout, which in turn reawakens Hakaider. His role culminates in a direct battle with Hakaider, where he initially gains the upper hand due to his superior combat abilities, but is ultimately defeated and decapitated by a concealed weapon. Even after this defeat, Gurjev has Michael's head integrated into a large tank, giving him a new transformed body with a red and blue asymmetrical appearance. In this form he attacks Hakaider again but is subdued once more. Michael's consciousness fades away after Gurjev is killed.
Michael's key relationship is with Gurjev, whom he serves without question. He has no personal loyalty to anyone else, as he is essentially a tool of the regime. His most significant relationship is the adversarial one with Hakaider. The two androids are linked by their origins: Hakaider was the prototype who failed, and Michael was the improved model built to replace him. Although Michael does not appear to change or develop as a character over the course of the film, his existence is tied to the regime, and his destruction is part of Hakaider's victory. His end is not marked by growth or redemption but by the simple extinguishing of his purpose once his master falls.
Michael possesses a number of notable abilities. He is always in his fully armored form, unlike Hakaider who must transform to fight. His armor is sleeker and his weapons are built directly into his body, making it harder to disarm him. He is a highly skilled combatant who can match Hakaider in battle and even overpower him initially. He can fly, as his angelic design suggests, and he has superhuman strength, speed, and durability. In his final transformed state as a large tank with his altered head, he becomes even more formidable, though still unable to defeat Hakaider permanently.
