Description
Gurjev is the main antagonist of the 1995 film and serves as the seraphim-like dictator of Jesus Town, a supposed utopia built on the ruins of what was once Jerusalem. His most defining characteristic is his tyrannical commitment to creating a world without free will, presenting a polished and benevolent façade that masks a ruthless and controlling nature.
Gurjev was originally a scientist who created the android Hakaider, intending him to be a tool for enforcing order. However, when Hakaider developed his own sense of free will, Gurjev deemed him a failure and ordered his disposal. After Hakaider was stolen and hidden away by rebellious scientists, Gurjev created Michael, a successor android who is completely loyal to him, to serve as his head of security and enforcer. Gurjev succeeded in establishing Jesus Town, where citizens have their free will removed via implanted chips that lobotomize them into a docile, infantile state, a punishment for any who dissent against his rigid laws. He refers to the citizens as his children, but thinks nothing of executing them or stripping them of their humanity to maintain his vision of peace. His persona is built upon a deep-seated god complex; he wears clothing that evokes a seraphim and has his words broadcast throughout the town to maintain his omnipresence.
When Hakaider resurfaces and breaks into Jesus Town, Gurjev immediately recognizes him and sends his security forces, and eventually Michael, to eliminate him. His motivations are driven by a twisted belief that his totalitarian control is necessary for a beautiful, peaceful society, as he famously states that flowers are beautiful because they do not question their master. His key relationship is with Michael, his loyal and powerful right hand, who enforces his will without question. He also has a direct and adversarial relationship with Hakaider, viewing him as a flawed creation to be destroyed, while Hakaider sees Gurjev as the symbol of the oppression he must end. Gurjev also opposes Kaoru and her rebel group, whom he has massacred when their hideout is discovered.
Throughout the story, Gurjev shows little to no development or change; he remains a consistent and remorseless tyrant. In the final confrontation, after Hakaider defeats Michael, Gurjev attempts to bargain for his life, promising to make Hakaider stronger. When Hakaider spares him and turns his back, deeming him not worth killing, the cowardly Gurjev tries to shoot him from behind, leading to Hakaider turning and killing him by driving his hand into his chest. As a villain, Gurjev possesses notable abilities and resources, including command over a heavily armed security force and the powerful android Michael. He also has the technical expertise to not only create advanced androids but also to integrate Michael's head into a massive tank-like form to fight Hakaider again. His most dangerous tool, however, is his control over the brainwashing technology that maintains his hold on Jesus Town.
