Description
Gonbe is the Japanese name for the Pokémon Munchlax, a small, bipedal creature recognized as the Big Eater Pokémon. In the context of the anime film Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, Gonbe is notable for being the first Generation IV Pokémon to appear in the anime series. With a height of 0.6 meters and a weight of 105 kilograms, Gonbe has a corpulent build covered in thick, dark blue fur, while the lower part of its face, its belly, and its feet are a lighter cream or white color. Two large ears stand upright on its head, and it has large eyes with very small pupils. Inside its wide mouth are two tiny, pointed teeth.
Gonbe’s defining characteristic is its enormous and indiscriminate appetite. The creature is known to consume food equal to its own body weight on a daily basis, often swallowing everything without chewing. It possesses an incredibly strong stomach that allows it to eat rotten or spoiled food without any ill effects. A common behavior is to hide food within its long, shaggy body fur for later consumption, though it frequently forgets that it has done so. In line with this gluttonous nature, its personality centers on an overwhelming and single-minded drive to find and eat anything even remotely edible, paying no attention to the quality or taste of the food. Beyond its powerful digestive system, Gonbe, as a Normal-type Pokémon, has the potential to learn a wide variety of powerful moves, including Hyper Beam and Solar Beam.
In the story of Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, Gonbe serves as an early example of a then-newly discovered Pokémon species. Details about its specific role, background, and key relationships in this film are limited, but it is known that during the events of Destiny Deoxys, one particular Gonbe evolves into its final form, Snorlax. This evolution occurs specifically to allow the Pokémon to stay afloat amidst a flood caused by the antagonist Block Bots, demonstrating its ability to adapt to a dangerous situation. This moment represents the character’s primary development within the film, showcasing a significant power increase in response to a crisis. As a baby Pokémon that evolves into the famously sedentary Snorlax, Gonbe is comparatively more mobile and active than its evolved form, though it is still driven by the same core instinct to eat and sleep.
