Description
Dokumondo is a kaijin, or monster, from the original 1970s Kamen Rider series, specifically appearing in episode 57 and the theatrical film Kamen Rider tai Jigoku Taishi. As a creation of the evil organization Shocker, Dokumondo is a ground spider monster, his design drawing heavily from the motif of a trapdoor spider or tsuchigumo, a mythical Japanese earth spider. He is presented as a member of Shocker's African branch, brought to Japan to carry out a specific and destructive mission.

The personality of Dokumondo is not explored in great depth, but his actions portray him as a cunning and ruthless operative. He is methodical in his approach to missions, preferring stealth and deception to direct confrontation. He is not characterized by overt arrogance or a grand ego but rather by a cold, predatory patience befitting his spider nature. His loyalty to Shocker is absolute, and he carries out his orders without hesitation or moral conflict, embodying the organization's inhuman dedication to its goals.

Dokumondo's primary motivation is the successful completion of his assigned task to serve Shocker's global ambition for conquest. His specific objective is to retrieve research from a scientist named Sawada Yukihiko. Sawada has developed a terrifying new form of liquid gunpowder capable of melting and burning any metal. Shocker plans to use this formula to dissolve all the metal in Japan, effectively crippling the nation's infrastructure and military capabilities. Dokumondo is the instrument chosen for this critical acquisition. He is also motivated by self-preservation, as failure to retrieve the formula leads to Jigoku Taishi, the Hell Ambassador, sentencing him to death, which spurs him to succeed in his second chance.

In the story, Dokumondo serves as a direct antagonist to the protagonist, Takeshi Hongo, also known as Kamen Rider 1, as well as a threat to Hongo's friend, Sawada. His role is to serve as a physical challenge and a plot device to create dramatic tension. His attempts to steal the liquid gunpowder formula and later to kidnap Sawada drive the conflict of the episode. He operates as a monster-of-the-week, a standard narrative structure for the series, where a unique kaijin is deployed to terrorize civilians and battle the hero before being defeated. His ability to burrow and impersonate a doctor allows him to infiltrate the hearts of civilian life—a hospital—heightening the sense of danger.

Dokumondo's key relationship is with his immediate superior, Jigoku Taishi, the commander of Shocker's Japan branch. After Dokumondo fails in his first attempt to steal the formula, Jigoku Taishi immediately sentences him to execution, demonstrating the organization's unforgiving nature and the high-pressure dynamic between its members. This relationship is purely functional and based on fear and duty. Another critical relationship, though adversarial, is with Kamen Rider 1. Dokumondo is ultimately defined by his conflict with the Rider, who is the sole obstacle to his mission. His relationship with Sawada is purely instrumental, viewing the scientist only as a target or a tool to be captured.

Development for Dokumondo is limited but present in his tactical shift following initial failure. After being thwarted by Kamen Rider 1 and nearly executed by Jigoku Taishi, Dokumondo changes his strategy. Instead of a direct assault, he devises a more cunning plan. He attacks and kills the director of the hospital where Sawada is a patient, reducing him to a skeleton, before assuming the director's identity. This act of disguise allows him to manipulate Sawada’s schedule and successfully kidnap the scientist from the operating room. This shows a clear adaptation from a direct assault to a patient, deceptive infiltration, demonstrating a degree of problem-solving intelligence. This development, however, is cut short as his disguise is ultimately discovered, leading to his final confrontation with Kamen Rider 1, where he is destroyed by the Rider Kick.

Dokumondo possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable opponent. His primary power is the ability to burrow and move freely underground, allowing him to ambush victims, escape from battles, and travel unnoticed. In combat, he is armed with sharp fangs capable of stripping the flesh from a human body, instantly killing and skeletonizing his prey. He can also spew a sticky, web-like substance from his mouth, which he can manipulate like a whip to entangle or strike his enemies. A key defensive trait is his oily skin, which makes him immune to the adhesive properties of his own webs. Finally, he has the demonstrated capacity for mimicry, as he can impersonate a human after killing them, as shown when he perfectly assumes the identity of a hospital director.
