Description
The son of a mercenary, Almark has known nothing but the constant conflict of the war-torn North. Despite being told he has an aptitude for magic, the young boy chose to hone his combat skills on the battlefield as a child soldier alongside his father Reiz, the vice-captain of the Black Wolves mercenary band. However, after a mission where Reiz saves the life of Yolog, the headmaster of the prestigious Norkh Institute for Magic in the peaceful South, Almark is promised a place at the academy. His father wishes to spare him the cruel and dangerous life of a mercenary, hoping his son will become a mage in a land that has long forgotten war.

Almark initially resists, wanting to follow in his fathers footsteps. After he nearly dies on the battlefield, his father firmly decides to send him south. At only nine years old, Almark begins a brutal, solitary journey from the frozen north to the southern island of Nork. He survives hunger, cold, magical beasts, and the treachery of other humans, learning to distinguish who can be trusted. It takes him two years, arriving a full two years late for his promised enrollment.

Upon finally reaching the Norkh Institute for Magic, Almark quickly discovers that life in the South is unlike anything he has ever seen. The Southerners view Northerners as barbarians, a prejudice that becomes an immediate obstacle for a boy hiding his mercenary lineage. As he takes his first steps toward becoming a full-fledged mage, he must navigate the rift between nobles and commoners, conceal his past as a child soldier, and rely on new friends while striving to one day return home strong enough to bring prosperity to his homeland and make his father proud.

His journey through the academy unfolds across several arcs. The first focuses on his difficult integration into the Institute for Magic. He later confronts A Northern Assassin, an arc that likely ties his past to his present. Subsequent storylines take him into the Ruins of Darkness for an expedition and eventually pit him against rivals in a Martial Arts Tournament.
