Description
Orokamonogatari marks a distinct shift in the Monogatari series, moving away from the linear narrative of Koyomi Araragi’s high school years into the Off Season. Now that Araragi has graduated, the story expands to focus on the lives of the girls he once helped, exploring their personal struggles and the new, often strange, oddities that continue to surface around them. The novel is structured as a collection of three interconnected arcs, each told from a different character’s perspective, weaving together themes of failure, identity, and the unforeseen consequences of past actions.

The first arc, Sodachi Fiasco, follows the reclusive Sodachi Oikura. After the events of Sodachi Lost, she has relocated to a new town, attempting to build a quiet life away from her traumatic past. The story is narrated by Sodachi herself, offering a rare glimpse into her solitary existence. As she tries to navigate a new school and new surroundings, she finds herself entangled in a minor but psychologically complex oddity, forcing her to confront her deep-seated issues with trust and self-worth without the direct intervention of Araragi.

The second arc, Suruga Bonehead, shifts focus to Suruga Kanbaru, the former basketball star and self-proclaimed disciple of Araragi. The central conflict arises when Suruga discovers the mummified left arm of the Rainy Devil, the very cursed monkey’s paw she thought she had permanently rid herself of. Its unexpected return, however, comes with a twist: the arm is now completely inert and useless. Accompanied by the enigmatic Ougi Oshino, Suruga embarks on an investigation to uncover why the arm has reappeared and what it means for her. The story delves into Suruga’s lingering guilt and her relationship with her own monstrous potential, exploring the idea that some curses are not easily escaped.

The final arc, Tsukihi Undo, centers on Araragi’s younger sister, Tsukihi, who is unaware that she is an immortal phoenix oddity. She is under the constant, secret watch of the doll-like tsukumogami, Yotsugi Ononoki. The plot is set in motion when Tsukihi catches Yotsugi moving while she was supposed to be playing dead. To maintain her cover and protect Tsukihi from the truth, Yotsugi improvises a wild lie, claiming to be a magical girl who possesses the doll to fight monsters. This forces Yotsugi to stage an increasingly absurd and convoluted battle to convince Tsukihi of the lie, all while grappling with her own identity as a tool for other people’s purposes. The arc blends comedy with a poignant look at the roles people play and the lengths one goes to protect a fragile peace.
