Description
Etsuko Murakami once believed she was special. In elementary school, her speed made her stand out, but as others caught up and surpassed her, she grew dissatisfied and gave up running entirely. Now a second-year student at Mitsuhigashi Girls High School in the coastal city of Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture, Etsuko drifts through her days without direction or purpose. Her family runs a dry cleaning business and seems distant, preoccupied with her older sister’s academic success, leaving Etsuko to feel increasingly alone.
She joins the school rowing club, but that too ends in disappointment when the club disbands. Discouraged and resigned, Etsuko has all but decided that effort is meaningless. Her perspective shifts when a transfer student named Riina Takahashi arrives. Passionate and determined where Etsuko is withdrawn, Riina refuses to let the rowing club remain defunct. She convinces Etsuko and their classmate Hime Saeki to help revive it. Though Etsuko initially resists, something in Riina’s unwavering dream begins to stir in her as well.
The fledgling team soon expands to include Taeko Hyoudou and Mayumi Imoto, two former rivals drawn in by the group’s growing energy. Together, these five girls form the school’s first female rowing team. They are complete novices with no experience, no resources, and no expectation of success from anyone around them. As they learn to pull together in perfect synchronization, each girl must confront her own insecurities and past failures. For Etsuko, rowing becomes a chance to reclaim the sense of purpose she lost years ago.
The team sets its sights on their first competition, knowing the odds are overwhelmingly against them. Through grueling practices on the serene waters of the Seto Inland Sea, the girls discover that true strength comes not from individual talent but from trust, perseverance, and the bonds they build with one another. Etsuko, who once believed trying hard was pointless, slowly learns that giving her all alongside her teammates might finally be the place where she belongs.
