Description
Wataru Aida is a young salesman who struggles with communication and feels out of place in his job. His only genuine joy comes from playing video games alone at home, where he meticulously studies online strategy guides and avoids interacting with other players. During a lunch break at the office, his senior coworker Reito Kashima catches him browsing a walkthrough site for the action role-playing game Elden Ring. Instead of reprimanding him, Reito surprises Wataru by asking for his help in conquering the game. Reluctantly, Wataru agrees, and the two begin playing together in the vast, hostile world of the Lands Between.

As they explore the game's treacherous dungeons and defeat its monstrous bosses, Wataru and Reito gradually form a bond that extends beyond the screen. Their cooperative play sessions become a regular routine after work, and the trust and communication required in Elden Ring start to influence Wataru’s behavior at the office. He becomes more confident in his sales calls, learns to read social cues from Reito, and begins to see his career differently. The story alternates between the mundane challenges of corporate life and the epic, atmospheric quests of the game, using the Sites of Grace — the game's checkpoints — as a metaphor for the moments of connection and rest the two characters share.

The narrative arc follows Wataru from isolation to tentative social engagement, with major turning points including his first real-time multiplayer victory, a misstep that strains the partnership, and a climactic battle against a late-game boss that forces both players to rely on each other completely. Meanwhile, Reito’s own backstory — a past of burnout and disillusionment with work — is revealed through their conversations. By the end, Wataru’s life has changed not because of any grand fantasy, but because a shared hobby opened the door to genuine human connection. The light novel is a slice-of-life story grounded in the real world, where the digital realm becomes the catalyst for personal growth and friendship.
