Description
In a medieval world terrorized by shape-shifting demons known as Yoma, humanity’s only defense is a secretive organization that creates hybrid warriors. These warriors, known as Claymores for the enormous swords they carry, are all female. Each is a half-human, half-Yoma being who possesses silver eyes and supernatural strength, but they live under a death sentence: every time they release their demonic power, they risk awakening into the very monsters they are sworn to kill.
The story follows Clare, the lowest-ranked Claymore, number 47. Unlike other warriors who volunteered for transformation, Clare was a vulnerable child who begged the Organization to implant the flesh and blood of Teresa, the most powerful Claymore who ever lived, into her body. Teresa had rescued Clare from a Yoma and become like an older sister to her, only to be brutally murdered by another Claymore named Priscilla, who subsequently lost control and transformed into an Awakened Being of terrifying power. Clare’s quest is driven by a need for vengeance against Priscilla, a goal far beyond her current abilities.
While on a mission, Clare saves a young boy named Raki, whose family has been killed by a Yoma and who has been cast out by his village. Despite the danger of traveling with a monster hunter, Raki insists on accompanying her, becoming her emotional anchor and reminding her of her own lost humanity.
Clare’s journey brings her into contact with other Claymores, including the strategic Miria, and reveals the brutal truth of the Organization. The warriors are ranked by power, and the lower-ranked are often treated as expendable. As Clare and her comrades climb the ranks, they discover that the Yoma are not natural predators but were artificially created by the Organization itself. Worse still, the Awakened Beings they are sent to eliminate are former Claymores who have crossed their limit and become rogue predators.
This leads to the Northern War, a massive campaign where the Organization sends nearly two dozen Claymores, including Clare, on a suicide mission against an army of Awakened Beings led by one of the Abyssal Ones, Isley of the North. Most of the warriors are slaughtered. Clare and a handful of survivors, including Miria, fake their deaths and go into hiding for seven years. During this time, Raki grows into a skilled swordsman while traveling with a seemingly childlike Priscilla, who has lost her memories but remains an existential threat.
After seven years, the surviving Claymores emerge, their abilities honed far beyond what the Organization believes possible. They launch a covert war to destroy the Organization from within. The final arcs of the story culminate in a confrontation in the Organization’s headquarters, where Clare finally faces Priscilla. As Clare pushes her body to its breaking point, the personality and power of Teresa, which has been dormant inside her all along, fully awakens. With Teresa’s strength and her own will, Clare finally destroys the monster that murdered her sister. The surviving Claymores are freed from the Organization’s control, and a fragile peace settles over the land as they walk away from a life of servitude and violence.
