Description
At thirteen years old, the young witch Kiki leaves her family home to begin a traditional year of independent training, a rite of passage for all witches in her world. Accompanied by her wisecracking black cat, Jiji, she flies on her broomstick to the bustling port town of Koriko, a coastal city inspired by European locales. There, she must build a life from scratch with only her magic and resourcefulness. Lacking a clear direction, Kiki uses her ability to fly to start a delivery service, ferrying packages, letters, and goods across the town’s winding streets and rooftops. Through her work, she encounters a variety of townsfolk—a kindly baker who offers her a room, a young inventor obsessed with flight, an elderly client with a poignant request, and other neighbors whose lives intersect with hers in small but meaningful ways. The series follows Kiki as she navigates the challenges of adolescence: loneliness, self-doubt, and the pressure to prove her worth. A major narrative arc involves a mysterious crisis that causes her magic to weaken, forcing her to confront what it truly means to be a witch and to find purpose beyond her broom. Along the way, Kiki’s optimism, empathy, and determination deepen her bonds with the people of Koriko, ultimately teaching her that belonging comes not from supernatural powers but from human connection. The story draws primarily from the first volume of Eiko Kadono’s six-book series, expanding on Kiki’s daily adventures, her growing sense of independence, and her quiet transformation from a sheltered girl into a confident young woman.
