Natsume Takashi, a teenage boy with the ability to see spirits, inherits a mysterious book from his late grandmother, Reiko. Known as the "Book of Friends," it contains the names of numerous spirits Reiko had defeated and bound to her will. These spirits, or yokai, are now bound to the book, and their names grant control over them. Natsume, however, feels no desire to wield such power and instead seeks to return the names to their rightful owners, freeing the spirits from their servitude.

Throughout the series, Natsume encounters various yokai, each with their own stories, struggles, and connections to the Book of Friends. Accompanied by his sardonic and protective spirit companion, Madara (who often takes the form of a rotund, cat-like creature and is nicknamed Nyanko-sensei), Natsume navigates the delicate balance between the human and spirit worlds.
