Description
Reito Naoi is a young man in his early twenties whose life has hit rock bottom. After being unjustly fired from his job, he makes a desperate attempt to steal a valuable device from his former workplace, only to be caught and arrested. With no future prospects and a growing sense of hopelessness, he awaits indictment in a detention cell. Unexpectedly, a lawyer visits him with a strange offer: his freedom in exchange for obeying the commands of an unnamed client.

With no other options, Reito accepts the deal. He is released and taken to meet the client, who turns out to be Senshu Yanagisawa, an executive at a major corporation and the half-sister of his late mother. This woman, a stranger to him, has only one order: he must become the custodian of a legendary camphor tree located on the grounds of the Tsukigō Shrine.

Thus begins Reito’s reluctant new life. The camphor tree is no ordinary tree; local legend holds that it can grant the wishes of those who pray to it in a specific ritual. Reito’s duty is to manage the tree and receive the visitors who come to perform this mysterious ceremony. Among the first is Yumi Saji, a university student who suspects her father, a construction company owner, of having an affair. Using a GPS tracker, she follows him to the shrine on the night of the full moon to uncover his secret.

As Reito continues his custodianship, he encounters a series of people, each carrying their own burdens and regrets. A young heir to a sweets company visits on the night of the new moon, following the cryptic final instructions left by his recently deceased father. Through these interactions, Reito begins to see beyond his own cynicism. He learns that the act of "praying" at the camphor tree is less about magic and more about a profound act of communication and legacy, a way for the living to send their deepest thoughts to those who have passed on, and vice versa.

Reito’s personal journey is intertwined with that of his aunt, Senshu. The story gradually reveals why she chose a down-and-out young man with a criminal record for such a sacred role. Facing her own mortality, she sees in Reito not just a caretaker, but her final link to the family and the truth behind the tree’s power. As Reito delves deeper into the mysteries of the camphorwood and the secrets of the Yanagisawa family, he is drawn into a final, unforeseen truth about the tree’s real power and the meaning of his own existence.
