Description
Formerly a god and now an ordinary girl trying to find her way, middle school student Nadeko Sengoku has a new dream: to become a professional manga artist. Following the events where she relinquished her divine powers, she spends her days shut in her room, drawing constantly to improve her craft. However, reality intrudes when her parents, tired of her reclusive lifestyle and her decision to skip high school after graduation, pressure her to find a job. Desperate to produce tangible results to convince them to support her artistic ambitions, Nadeko accepts an unusual offer from the doll-like shikigami Yotsugi Ononoki, who resides at the Araragi household.
Using Yotsugi’s supernatural abilities, Nadeko successfully creates four physical copies of herself. These alter egos are meant to be helpful assistants, each representing a distinct aspect of her personality from different points in her past. But the plan immediately backfires when the four Nadekos refuse to cooperate, escaping into the town and causing chaos on their own. Each runaway embodies a different version of who she used to be: a meek and manipulative girl, a cold and resentful one, and others that represent the identities she has tried to shed.
The story follows Nadeko as she chases down these fragmented pieces of her former selves, forced to confront the parts of her history she would rather forget. This journey brings her face to face with the various problematic traits that defined her earlier years, including her obsessive crush on Koyomi Araragi and the self-victimizing behavior that led her to become a dangerous snake god. Along the way, she is joined by Yotsugi, who feels responsible for the mess, and the enigmatic Ougi Oshino, whose involvement complicates matters further. The narrative includes appearances from other members of the Monogatari cast, such as Suruga Kanbaru, Sodachi Oikura, Tsukihi Araragi, and Hitagi Senjogahara, though the focus remains squarely on Nadeko’s internal struggle.
The arc culminates in a final confrontation with a version of herself representing the innocent girl who simply wanted to be loved. Rather than destroying this part of her past, Nadeko must learn to accept and integrate it, promising her younger self that she will love again and not close herself off from the world. The story is set after the main character Koyomi Araragi has graduated from high school and left for university, with the action taking place in the familiar town where previous supernatural incidents have occurred. The narrative structure is largely introspective, focusing on themes of growing up, accepting one’s past, and the difficulty of controlling one’s own identity. The central conflict is not about defeating a monster but about reconciling with the people one used to be in order to move forward.
