In the year 2020, decades after a war that determined humanity’s survival, a mysterious base called the Empire of Atlantis rises from the Atlantic Ocean and quickly conquers the world. The elite forces of Atlantis are human-beast hybrids who pilot a gigantic weapon known as the High Beast, a war machine armored with an indestructible substance called Orichalcum that renders it immune to all conventional attacks. Dr. Shifukan, a researcher investigating the mysterious Getter Line, discovers the only weakness of Orichalcum: it can be defeated through the game of mahjong. Using this principle, he develops a humanoid weapon called Getter Robo. To pilot this unconventional fighting machine, three individuals are chosen: Banko Benimaru, Takeo Midorikawa, and Tsutsuno Byakuya. Together, they form the Getter team and throw themselves into the battle to protect the Earth from the Atlantean threat, piloting their unique robot, the Getter Honghu, in combat where strategy and mahjong skills are as important as raw power. The story was serialized in the magazine Kindai Mahjong, reflecting its unusual fusion of mecha action with the tile-based game.
