Description
The story of Giant Robo begins with the shadowy international secret society known as Big Fire, which is advancing a sinister project to conquer the world. Their plan centers on the GR Project, the development of massive, powerful robots. To interfere with Big Fire’s scheme, the United Nations dispatches a special agent to Country T. However, in a case of mistaken identity, the agents of Big Fire kidnap a young Japanese tourist named Daisaku Kusama, believing him to be the UN operative.

While held captive, Daisaku finds himself near the activation of the society's ultimate weapon, a giant robot designated GR-1. When an explosion occurs and the robot’s control system is damaged, GR-1 registers Daisaku’s voice as its master, and the teenager escapes with the colossal machine. Now in control of their greatest asset, Daisaku allies himself with Azuma, the head of the United Nations special investigation organization in Japan, and dedicates himself to using GR-1 to counterattack Big Fire’s remaining forces.

Big Fire retaliates by deploying its other GR units to eliminate Daisaku and recapture GR-1. The first of these is GR-2, designed for naval combat, and GR-3, built for aerial attacks. The trio of robots follows a Land, Sea, Sky design philosophy, with GR-1 serving as the land-based fighter before later being upgraded with flight and naval capabilities. The escalating conflict comes to a head when Big Fire recovers a hydrogen bomb from a crashed bomber and demands GR-1 in exchange for the weapon’s safe return, forcing a final confrontation at their underwater headquarters.

Daisaku Kusama is depicted as a morally grounded and resourceful young man. Initially a college-aged student and an Olympic-level sharpshooter, his appearance was later altered to that of a younger boy in the manga’s run, reflecting the cast of the concurrent live-action television series. He remains calm in battle and is fiercely protected by GR-1, which displays hints of self-awareness and a will of its own. Azuma serves as his mentor and the leader of the UN forces, providing a strategic backbone to Daisaku’s frontline battles.

Beyond the original 1967 storyline, the manga universe expanded significantly decades later. In 2006, Yasuhiro Imagawa, the director of the acclaimed Giant Robo OVA, scripted a new manga titled Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Burned. This series functions as an alternate continuity, acting as a spiritual successor to the OVA while featuring a radically different tone. The narrative presents a world with black-and-gray morality where both the Big Fire terrorist group and a competing organization called the IPO are portrayed as antagonists. Daisaku is raised by members of Big Fire, and the story takes a much darker and more cynical view of Yokoyama’s original characters and legacy, often noted for its mature and confrontational content. This later manga left its narrative unresolved, concluding on a frustrating cliffhanger.
