Satō-san no Tomodachi follows a woman in her early forties who finds herself at an age where friendships have naturally begun to dwindle. She feels a vague sense of discomfort at her workplace and lives with anxiety about her mother's declining health, as the two live together. One day, she discovers the Nintendo Switch game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Through this other world, she begins to experience a lightness and freedom that contrasts with her daily reality. The story explores how this virtual space gradually changes her real life, leading her to encounter a new kind of friendship defined by a comfortable, unforced distance. The narrative focuses on two characters both with the surname Satō who navigate these feelings of loneliness and connection, using the game as a bridge to face their struggles in the real world.
