Description
The story takes place in Asuka Empire, a long-running Japanese-style VRMMORPG that first launched during the height of the original Sword Art Online incident. This game world carries special significance as the former home of the Sleeping Knights guild, including players like Yuuki, Ran, and Merida. The narrative begins when two young women who met and became friends within the game encounter an unusual quest. Nayuta is a stoic and somewhat emotionless warrior priestess, while Koyomi is an excitable and talkative ninja. While taking a break from a new horror-themed event called the 108 Apparitions, they come across a mysterious elderly priest named Yanagi. Despite knowing nothing about video games, Yanagi is desperate to complete a specific quest within one week and has offered an extraordinary reward of one million yen to any detective who can help him succeed.
The detective who accepts this strange request is an equally peculiar young man. A survivor of the original SAO death game, this fox-faced player runs a detective agency within Asuka Empire. Uniquely, he has invested all of his stat points into luck, rendering him completely useless in direct combat but granting him an exceptionally high rare item drop rate and other unconventional advantages. The quest Yanagi wishes to complete is called Ghost Orchestra, a notoriously difficult challenge that has stumped every player who has attempted it. As Nayuta, Koyomi, and their dubious detective partner work to solve the mystery, they uncover layers of meaning behind the quest, including its connection to a member of the Sleeping Knights who has since passed away. The story takes on poignant and bittersweet tones as the investigation reveals personal stakes tied to the real world and the legacy of those lost to illness and the SAO incident.
The first volume builds toward emotional revelations about why Yanagi is so determined to clear the quest within a strict timeframe, tying the game world challenges to real-world grief and unfinished business. The second volume continues the detective`s work when a girl who bears a mysterious resemblance to a newly implemented quest character called the Mobile Demon Puppet Demon Princess hires him to find her missing father. The father disappeared in the real world, but the key to unraveling the mystery lies within Asuka Empire. Between these central cases, the narrative also includes lighter episodes depicting the characters visiting a hot spring and attending a capybara festival within the virtual world, gradually building the relationships and trust among the party members.
