Description
A colossal, circular pit known as the Abyss was discovered 1,900 years ago on a remote island in the southern sea of Beolusk. With a diameter of roughly 1,000 meters and an unknown depth reaching at least 20,000 meters, this chasm contains the remnants of an ancient, advanced civilization, along with strange and valuable artifacts that draw people from all over the world. These adventurers, known as Delvers or Cave Raiders, risk their lives to explore the Abyss’s mysterious ecosystem, but the deeper they go, the more they face two insurmountable threats: hostile and bizarre creatures, and a mysterious affliction called the Curse of the Abyss. The Curse manifests upon any ascent, with symptoms ranging from mild dizziness on the first layer to certain death on the seventh. It is caused by a force field that flows like inverted thorns, allowing safe passage downward but causing harm when moving up.
The story follows Riko, an 11-year-old orphan living in the orphanage of Orth, the town built at the Abyss’s edge. As a Red Whistle, the lowest rank of Delver, she is only permitted to explore the safest top layer. Her mother, Lyza the Annihilator, was a legendary White Whistle Delver who disappeared into the depths when Riko was two years old. Her father died during an exploration before she was born. Riko dreams of becoming a great Delver like her mother and solving the Abyss’s mysteries.
During a routine excavation, Riko discovers a mysterious robot boy with no memory of his past. She names him Reg. Though he appears human, he possesses powerful retractable arms and a devastating energy cannon called the Incinerator. Shortly after, a message from Lyza is found, delivered from deep within the Abyss, reading "I'll be waiting for you at the bottom of the abyss." Convinced her mother is still alive, Riko decides to make the descent with Reg, knowing that due to the Curse, she will never be able to return to the surface.
As they descend, the pair encounter the increasingly hostile layers. On the second layer, the Forest of Temptation, they meet Ozen the Immovable, a White Whistle Delver and former mentor to Lyza. Ozen trains them and reveals that Riko was stillborn and was revived only by being placed in a relic from the Abyss, suggesting a strange connection between Riko and the pit. On the fourth layer, the Goblets of Giants, Reg is forced to use his Incinerator to save Riko from a deadly Orb Piercer, but the blast renders him unconscious and Riko is critically poisoned and begins suffering from the Curse. They are rescued by Nanachi, a rabbit-like Narehate—a being who survived the sixth layer’s curse but was left deformed. Nanachi once served the White Whistle Bondrewd, the Lord of Dawn, who conducted horrific experiments on orphaned children to study the Curse.
Nanachi’s closest friend, Mitty, was subjected to an experiment that transferred the full force of the sixth layer’s curse onto her, rendering her an immortal, mindless husk. Unable to kill Mitty, Nanachi fled with her to the fourth layer and lived in isolation, observing Delvers while searching for a way to end Mitty’s suffering. Recognizing Reg’s Incinerator as the only thing that can permanently destroy Mitty, Nanachi agrees to help Riko and Reg in exchange for Reg releasing Mitty’s soul. After this emotional act, Nanachi joins the party, and the three descend to the fifth layer, the Sea of Corpses, to face Bondrewd.
At Ido Front, Bondrewd’s base on the fifth layer, the group encounters Prushka, a girl who sees Bondrewd as her loving father. Bondrewd, however, intends to dissect Reg for study and uses his Umbra Hands to capture him. To pass into the sixth layer, the point of no return, the group needs a White Whistle. It is revealed that a White Whistle is not merely a rank but a living artifact, a Life-Reverberating Stone created from the sacrifice of someone who holds the user as their highest value, or Haku. In a desperate confrontation, Prushka, who has bonded with Riko, is killed and transformed into a White Whistle for her. Reg, pushed to his limits, finally destroys Bondrewd’s body, allowing the group to escape into the sixth layer.
The sixth layer, the Capital of the Unreturned, holds the village of Ilblu, a society of Narehate ruled by a being named Faputa. The village was created decades ago by the starving crew of the Ganja suicide corps, who used a wishing egg relic to grant the dying child Irumyuui’s wish for a place where her people could survive. Irumyuui was transformed into the village itself, and her children became the Narehate inhabitants. Faputa, Irumyuui’s last child and the embodiment of her rage and desire for revenge, seeks to destroy the village to free her mother’s soul. After a violent confrontation that destroys Ilblu, Faputa joins Riko’s party. The group continues deeper, learning from a soul inside Lyza’s whistle that someone connected to Reg is waiting for them at the Ring of Essence, a mysterious ring of light visible in the seventh layer. The party now ventures into the unknown depths of the seventh layer, the Final Maelstrom, where the Curse promises certain death, to uncover the truth about the Abyss, Reg’s origin, and Lyza’s fate.
