Description
In Head Runner, a young man named Wataru Kazeshiro feels he has nothing he wants to do with his life, drifting without purpose. His directionless existence is shattered when the only familiar face in his life, an elderly acquaintance, commits suicide. In the aftermath of this shocking event, Wataru takes the old mans living head and embarks on a desperate flight, beginning a surreal living head escape. The story follows Wataru as he flees, carrying the severed head of the old man whose desires and unfinished goals remain a mystery. As he runs, the narrative delves into why the old man chose this path, what his true wishes were, and how Wataru will interpret and carry those wishes forward. The series is set in a contemporary world, grounded in realism yet upended by this bizarre and suspenseful premise. Wataru is the central protagonist, a young man haunted by his own past and internal conflicts, whose hidden history gradually comes to light as the pressure of his flight intensifies. The old man, whose head Wataru carries, is the catalyst for the entire plot, his unknown desires driving the chase. The author is Takashi Kajiyama, known for the previous work Kid Nabbers. The narrative arc begins with the shocking suicide and the decision to take the head, immediately transitioning into a tense suspense story about the flight itself. This escape arc forces Wataru to confront both external threats and his own psychological scars. As the story progresses, the focus shifts to uncovering the past shadows that Wataru carries, deepening the mystery of why he was connected to this old man and what the old man truly wanted to accomplish. The plot weaves together the physical danger of the pursuit with an internal journey of self-discovery, as Wataru is forced to envision a future for himself based on the dying wish of another.
