Manga
Description
In the desolate rural expanse of northern Kanto, three girls find themselves trapped in the suffocating monotony of their industrial high school. They are not friends, merely classmates sharing the distinction of being the only three girls in their year. Each harbors a desperate need for money as an escape ticket from their dead-end town and dysfunctional families. Their solution is as reckless as it is audacious: they will cultivate cannabis on the school rooftop.

The story follows three protagonists. There is Hidemi Boku, a hip-hop fan with a detached personality who uses rap cyphers to vent her frustrations against an abusive father and a neglectful mother. There is Miruku Yaguchi, a fast and popular sprinter from the school’s upper social caste who secretly dreams of making films in Tokyo, weary of her mother’s childlike dependence and emotional manipulation. And there is Mako Iwakuma, a sharp-tongued, self-aware otaku and literary snob who looks down on her peers while hiding her own deep-seated insecurities and physical vulnerabilities behind a wall of acid criticism.

The inciting incident occurs when Hidemi, after surviving a violent assault and near-rape by a low-level DJ named Sato, escapes with a bag of cannabis seeds she found in his apartment. Seeing the seeds not as a drug but as currency, she approaches Miruku with a proposal. To disguise their illegal operation, the girls establish the "Gardening Club" as a front to reclaim a long-abandoned, dilapidated greenhouse on the school roof. What begins as a shaky pact between three misfits evolves into a surprisingly efficient business. They recruit two older male students who originally used the greenhouse for secret trysts, expanding their operation and raking in substantial profits.

As their illicit horticultural project flourishes, the narrative tension escalates on two fronts. Internally, the girls navigate the moral compromises and paranoia of their secret lives while bonding over a shared, fragile hope for the future. Externally, the threat from the past looms large. The DJ Sato, having survived the initial encounter, recovers and uses a dropped student ID to infiltrate Hidemi’s home, coercing her younger brother into helping him while plotting a violent revenge. The story reaches its climax on graduation day. As the ceremony proceeds below, a final, fiery confrontation unfolds on the rooftop. Sato confronts Hidemi, leading to an explosion that sets the cannabis greenhouse ablaze. As the fire consumes their crop and the smoke seeps into the graduation hall causing chaos among the attendees, the three girls reunite on the roof. Injured but united, they leave the inferno and the ceremony behind, walking away from the life they knew without a clear plan for the future, only their solidarity intact. The manga concludes its narrative across two complete volumes.
