Description
Yuri is a high school student plagued by catastrophic real-world misfortune, from bird droppings to stolen umbrellas, leaving him on the verge of despair. Seeking escape and a measure of control, he enters the highly immersive VRMMO game Blade Skill Online, believing he can finally overcome his bad luck by maxing out his character’s Luck stat. He thoroughly researches the game’s official strategy guide, which claims the most powerful build is a Summoner who uses a Bow with a pure Luck distribution. Following this advice, he creates his avatar and dives in, only to discover that internet trolls had overwritten the official site with blatant lies. The Summoner class is widely considered useless, the Bow is the weakest weapon in the game, and a pure Luck build is ridiculed for being completely ineffective in combat. To compound his misery, the random character generator creates an avatar for him that is a strikingly beautiful silver-haired, red-eyed girl, and he is immediately harassed by another player.
Refusing to give up or delete his character, Yuri decides to prove the trolls wrong through sheer grit. His hyper-aggressive playstyle, combined with the desperate need to survive, leads him to discover hidden synergies and unintended loopholes in the game’s mechanics. He defeats and tames his first monster, a cursed sword, by pinning it down and stabbing it with a beginner’s arrow, which grants him automatic target acquisition. Because his defense and agility are zero, any hit will kill him unless his passive Guts ability activates, so he fights by overwhelming enemies with relentless attacks before they can land a blow. This unorthodox approach quickly escalates, and he begins soloing and taming raid bosses that entire guilds cannot defeat, turning them into his personal minions. As his power grows, the game’s developers, embarrassed by how their incompetence has created an unstoppable monster, become actively antagonistic. They repeatedly nerf his abilities, launch special events designed to kill him, and even hire top assassins from other games, but every obstacle only makes Yuri more determined, and he retaliates in ways that directly harm the developers’ profits.
The setting is the fictional VRMMO world of Blade Skill Online, a game with a real-money trade option and a developer team that, while brilliant programmers, are short-sighted and spiteful administrators. The game features an achievement system that rewards unique titles and skills, which Yuri exploits to its fullest. The story follows several notable narrative arcs. The initial Despair and Determination arc establishes Yuri’s terrible real-life luck and his disastrous entry into the game, culminating in his first victory against the cursed sword that defines his future playstyle. The Rise of the Hidden Boss arc sees Yuri’s reputation grow as he becomes known by terrifying titles such as Raid Boss, Wild Last Boss, and Demon King, culminating in a battle royale tournament where he unleashes an army of tamed raid bosses and single-handedly wipes out over 30,000 players at once. The Helheim arc involves him arriving in the city of Helheim, where summoners are persecuted, and he is summarily sentenced to death. He breaks himself and over 860 NPC summoners out of an underground prison, an act that triggers the Evil King skill and officially brands him as the game’s greatest villain in the eyes of its system. The final major arc is the escalating War Against the Developers, where the game’s creators abandon any pretense of fairness, attempting to drive Yuri out of their game through nerfs, targeted content, and imported assassins, only to have their plans backfire spectacularly as Yuri continues to rise and even their own hired hitmen turn against them.
