Description
At 30 years old, Hiroto Takei is a failed manga artist whose career never materialized beyond a few one-shots. After his editor indirectly suggests he give up, he decides to abandon his dream and travels as far away from Japan as possible, landing in Brazil to clear his head.
Getting lost in the maze-like metropolis of São Paulo, Hiroto inadvertently wanders into a community, a favela. His disorienting arrival is marked by immediate violence as he is robbed and witnesses a murder. In this state of panic, he is rescued by a sharp-eyed 15-year-old boy named João. Despite living in a garbage-strewn environment ruled by the constant threat of gunfire, Hiroto is stunned to find João casually drawing manga with undeniable talent.
João lives with his mother Isabela and his siblings. His older brother, Gab, is an active member of the local crime faction, I.M., which controls the underworld of the state. The community is on a war footing as a rival faction from Rio de Janeiro, F.S.L., has invaded their territory. As the violence escalates, João faces immense pressure to follow his brother’s path into the gang to survive.
Inspired by the boy’s raw talent and desperate to save him from a tragic fate, Hiroto finds a renewed sense of purpose. He decides to use his professional experience not for his own glory, but to mentor João. Their goal is to enter a Japanese manga contest, offering a slum dweller a chance to escape the cycle of crime and achieve a dream that transcends borders.
