Manga
Description
Hime has known that her childhood best friend Akira is a girl on the inside long before anyone else. When the two begin high school, Akira finally decides to live as her true self, discarding her slacks for a sailor uniform and presenting as female at school for the first time. Hime, who has secretly been in love with Akira for years, is thrilled but also overwhelmed by a fierce protective instinct. As Akira faces confused whispers and ridicule from classmates who see her as a boy in a girl's uniform, Hime’s protective tendencies go into overdrive.

In a misguided show of solidarity, Hime decides to wear the boys’ school uniform to take the attention off Akira and stand by her side. This plan backfires spectacularly. Instead of deflecting scrutiny, Hime draws even more commotion, and her actions send confusing messages about her own identity and her intentions. Akira gently points out that her own feminine presentation is not a performance or a symbolic act of protest, but simply who she is. Hime is forced to confront the painful realization that her well-meaning efforts to protect Akira often run counter to Akira’s true feelings and desire for a normal school life.

The story primarily follows Hime as she navigates the messy gap between being a good friend and acting on her romantic feelings for Akira. As the series progresses through its four volumes, their relationship deepens but becomes more complicated. A rift forms between them when Akira begins to gain confidence, makes new friends, and develops a crush on an older boy from the school’s football team. Hime struggles with jealousy and the fear that her friendship with Akira is slipping away.

Following a major argument, the two stop speaking for weeks. Their conflict forces both girls to grapple with profound questions about what being a girl means to each of them. Akira feels frustrated that no one questions Hime’s femininity, regardless of how she dresses, while Hime is uncomfortable being seen by others as nothing but a girl. To repair their friendship, they must learn to accept themselves and each other. The emotional journey culminates in Hime finally confessing her true romantic feelings to Akira, bringing the story to a heartwarming and hopeful conclusion set years in the future at a friend's wedding.
