Description
The story begins in the Kyoho era of 18th century Japan, a time of severe financial decline for the Tokugawa Shogunate. In a desperate bid to restore the nation’s fortunes, the shogunate revives a centuries-old legend: the vast hidden treasure of the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Rather than searching solely within Japan, a shocking theory emerges that the fortune was secretly transported across the Pacific. A man, a shinobi, is dispatched on a clandestine mission to the untamed, unfamiliar lands of America to locate it and save Japan from economic ruin.
The protagonist is a middle-aged shinobi who has likely left his days of active duty behind. Compelled by duty or circumstance, he leaves his homeland to navigate a foreign world very different from his own. The setting is a juxtaposition of early 18th century Edo period Japan and the rugged, expansive frontier of colonial America. The central conflict lies in bridging these two worlds, both geographically and culturally, as the aging spy must use his wits and traditional skills to decode clues left by Ieyasu that are scattered across an alien continent.
Notable narrative arcs are expected to follow the shinobi’s voyage across the ocean and his dangerous search through the American wilderness. He will likely face competition from other treasure hunters, the challenges of surviving in a new environment without support, and the need to adapt espionage techniques to a land without the familiar structures of Japanese society. The arc of the desperate shogunate back in Japan, led by Tokugawa Yoshimune, is interwoven as they place their last hopes on the success of the mission.
