Description
Natsume Kanazawa is a 28-year-old manga artist in Tokyo whose professional career has failed to take off after five years of struggle. As she nears her breaking point, her live-in boyfriend receives a job transfer to India and proposes that she accompany him, dangling the prospect of marriage. Seeing this as a sign to abandon her faltering dreams, Natsume agrees and moves to Delhi. The hope of a new life quickly shatters when her boyfriend reveals his traditional expectations: he wants her to quit manga entirely and become a dutiful housewife. In a moment of fierce clarity, Natsume asks why she needs his permission to draw, dumps him on the spot, and finds herself alone in an unfamiliar and chaotic country.
Lost and unmoored, Natsume has a fateful encounter with Ruby, a young Indian woman who, despite her proud and resilient demeanor, wears a frustrated expression. Ruby voices a reality common in her culture: in India, it is normal for women to quit their jobs after marriage. Despite coming from different worlds, Japan and India, and speaking different languages, the two women recognize their shared struggle against societal pressure to sacrifice their careers for domestic life. This connection sparks a change in Natsume, setting her on a life-changing adventure through India. As she navigates the vibrant streets of Delhi, she encounters a community of resilient and radiant Indian women, and through them, slowly rediscovers the strength to follow her own dreams on her own terms. The narrative directly compares gender roles in both nations, exploring how women navigate professional and domestic expectations while forming cross-cultural bonds of solidarity.
